"if you did, you never would have hired me"

Most people see what is, and never see what can be.
- Albert Einstein

I just find it interesting because there's this quote here, and then there's Humpty Dumpty where House says to Cuddy -

"You see the world as it is, and you see the world as it could be."

Do you know what I mean? I'd like to prompt something or ask a question but I don't even know what conclusion I'm trying to make here.

"...what you don't see is what everybody else sees - the giant, gaping chasm in between."

I guess I've just never really understood what he meant by that. Does he mean she can see what IS, right NOW, and she can see what she wants there to BE but she doesn't seem to grasp the time and effort it will take to get there? Because I don't know if I buy that. This is Cuddy, someone who has worked her ass off her whole life to finish at the top of her class and be the first female Dean of Medicine. I have a hard time believing she doesn't know a thing or two about effort. Or maybe that's not even it. Maybe he was trying to tell her that she seems to believe you can have both what IS and what you WANT but you actually can't because sometimes they can't be the same thing? Or is he basically telling her she has her head in the clouds and needs to get more real with herself and accept that there IS, in fact, a giant, gaping chasm that is really shitty and sucks and isn't as clear cut as he thinks she wants it to be. Or was he saying that she's too ambitious? Like she sees what is and sees what could be and acts as though there's nothing in between that needs conquering. Or like, she can't see the possibility that things can go wrong (because if she did, she never would have hired him). Is he telling her to let go and accept the fact that she can't fix or control everything? I know that whole scene and the quote are so deep so I wish I could understand it more.

And then Albert Einstein seems to differ. And I wonder what he'd make of Cuddy since he thinks you can't both see what IS and what CAN be. But apparently she can?

And House, what about House? "... if you did, you never would have hired me." So he has established that he is that giant, gaping chasm between what is and what could be. Is that kind of a slam on himself, then? That he and/or parts of him stand in the way of this beautiful "what COULD be" that Cuddy wants? Or is it about what the world wants in general and not just Cuddy? SEE, DO YOU SEE HOW I OVERTHINK MYSELF TO DEATH ALL THE TIME.

My head is a very, very confusing place. I ponder a lot.

media - quotes, media - dialogue, question for you, character - cuddy, tv - house
