DISCUSSION - behaving around other races, political correctness

May 02, 2008 23:38

OKAY SO THIS IS EXCITING. lksdhdfsjkdfa. I'm pulling a response to THIS POST and opening up the first of many of these discussions.

question;
A white person describes a black person as articulate. The black person takes offense, because of the somewhat old stereotype that black people are not as educated and cannot express themselves in a clear, understandable way. The white person did not mean to insult the black person... because, honestly, the black person *was* articulate.

I am a southern, white young woman. There are times when I have NO IDEA how to behave around someone who is black. I worry about what's going to fly out of my mouth because I don't want to offend anyone. There is just... all this political correct bullshit out in the world. And there are some people who really don't care for it, while there are some people who expect you to follow it. SO. UM... the relationships and the political correct world between races. Discuss.

liss' prompts;
- DO people who are affected by stereotypes get offended at compliments that can be somehow related to said stereotype? For example, if someone tells me I'm smart, should I assume they are thinking of the Dumb Blonde stereotype and be upset that they went out of their way to point out that I was the opposite?
- Where IS that line? IS there EVEN a line. Does anyone have any other examples?
