I made a premiere present for all the House/Cuddy shippers! Because I love you guys and wanted to take you into a new season with a reminder of everywhere we've been, and hope for all of the places we've yet to go. ♥ I promise that you won't be disappointed with this one. PROMISE.
This is my personal favorite House/Cuddy piece I've ever done. I tried SO hard with this one, to not only use angles & clips that I didn't see used as often, but to really push my editing. When I first got this song idea, I saw the whole vid mostly in slow motion. It turned out the furthest from slow motion you can possibly get. I didn't want to take the easy way out - I couldn't have wasted all of my music like that. I don't think I've ever used my music so much in a video EVER. And I tried really hard with these cuts, to make it harder for you guys to distinguish between the video and the song - they're one thing, the same thing. & it's not the typical Maroon 5 "This Love" video, I promise. Just wait. ;)

The general idea behind this one is that this relationship is destroying them both, but in some sick way they can’t give it up. It’s not that simple. It’s horrible and depressing and it’s physically breaking them down, but they deal with it because… they do. They WANT to. Do they ever admit they want to? No. And when either of them gets too close, the other one backs off. And it IS a game, and it IS a dance. And it’s been this way for years. And it’s getting to the breaking point now, and they both know it. They’re gonna have to decide - all or nothing.
This is the first video I have ever made where I’ve been able to see it from the outside the entire time. Like when I was making it and watching it back as I went? I was able to enjoy it like it wasn't mine. So I really think that’s a good thing. I can’t really explain it, but like I get so attached to the behind-the-scenes crap that I can never really see my stuff as it comes across to other people. But this one was SO different.
And I had fun. The quick cuts were really hard to fill in, but they kept me interested. All I could see was color and contrast, and I never got bored or discouraged. That is priceless, that right there.
This video is a dance to me. And I am the choreographer. All of them feel like this, which is probably why I like vidding so much, but this one is that and THEN some. Just... watch them move. EVERY move - every blink, every step, every head turn - they make is meant to match the music. I can't explain it, but this element really stands out to me in this one.
0:12 - watch her head/mouth with that rattle in the song. This whole beginning No Reason section is just meant to preface the video, and kind of open it up slow - this was back when things were just starting to go downhill for them... before everything just started coming at them faster than they knew how to deal with it. Just watch for timing, I guess here.
0:21 - step on "goodbye".
0:23 - focus in on the answering machine, because she really is the one talking to him in this clip. The story here is that his drugs are a huge factor in their relationship. Also, watch him flick the thing in the background.
0:26 - eyes on "me". This video relies SO heavily on little timing like that, because I can assure you that if you have to wonder if something was intentional or not, it WAS intentional. Every little thing like that. And most people probably won't even notice half of these things. But that's okay, because even if they don't see them, they'll work their way into their subconscious and add to the video as a whole, whether they recognize it or not. But I'm reminding you to watch this video with a metaphorical magnifying glass because I know some people have expressed interest in the past about these sorts of things. ♥ See what you can spot. ;) like 0:30 - her eyes on "goodbye". Left eye goes on "good", right eye goes on "bye".
0:31 - annnnd. it starts. their relationship - all of the problems, the fights, the destruction - is completely non-stop. and they can never catch up or find any air. and the pattern in clip choice here goes Both - Cuddy - Both - House - Both, etc. It alternates to show that while they're tied up in this bullshit together, they're still individuals, and dealing with this alone, too. GOD I can't really explain it so I hope you know what I mean.
0:39 - we ditch the individual shots in favor of black ones, and we keep the shots of them together, to show the audience that they are currently in/have been in a relationship.
0:45 - THIS IS SERIOUS. That black flashy stuff isn't just an effect in my program. I had to do all of that by hand. I HAD TO USE MATH. IN A VIDEO. I had to mark the section of music that I wanted to pulse like this. Then I had to count the beats as I listened to it, to determine how many shots of House or Cuddy I would need. THEN I had to calculate all of this nonsense to make it all equal and fit within the confines of my marked off section. This was probably the hardest part of the whole video. So worth it, though.
0:49 - change to red on "fire". and the way her head shakes on "chaos". & 0:52 - reverse motion. ;)
1:01 - personal favorite part: the way she takes that last little strut on that big beat before "this".
1:02 - i'll explain the recurring pattern for this now. "This" - always a shot of them standing together; "Love" - shot of one of them; "Has" - shot of the other. This whole chorus, I can't really give you specifics because there are so many and this commentary is ALREADY too long, but please please PLEASE watch for timing.
1:04 - another recurring pattern throughout the video: "taken its toll" is always a shot of the physical repercussions of their damaging relationship.
1:15 - watch her eyes on "I won't say". they're like *bam-bam-bam*. and listen to her push him. notice how i said 'listen'. ;)
1:24 - favorite section. this whole section was meant to be a huge contradiction on her part. How she always says “goodbye” but ends up flying right back at him. And then the shots of her turning in slow motion on the two “I wont say goodbye anymore”s is meant to show exactly that - she turns away but always turns back. And in the technical aspect, we've got parallels ♥. run-run-run-run, touch-touch-touch-touch.
1:42 - turning point for Cuddy. this is HUGE for her - this is her moment of realization. i drew this out not only because the music called for it, but because i wanted to give you guys, the audience, a break from their relationship too, to make you identify with Cuddy and experience her "what the hell am I doing?" moment with her.
1:58 - she walks in time with the music and i DIE. AND. she's really saying "it's a game, and i'm gonna win", and they lyrics are "kept playing love like it was just a game". hello.
2:04 - power shift. now he's in control. and this is them. that constant struggle and juggling of power over the other. & 2:08 - physical repercussion on Cuddy this time.
2:12 - the way she turns and "sits" into that music. I can't really explain what i mean, but this is a personal favorite. AND THIS IS GOING TO MAKE NO SENSE AND YOU'RE GOING TO THINK I'M ON DRUGS, but... there are a few small parts in every video I make that make me feel a different color inside. And this is one of those. I can't explain it, it just means it's a different kind of favorite.
2:14 - look what i found! i found matching action! and watch her mouth quiver on "me". it makes me so sad.
2:21 - listen to him bang his head on her window. and feel her "whoa-oh-oh". feel it with her.
2:25 - WATCH. THOSE. EYES.
2:28 - wrists hit the table on that 1 - *crash*, and then it's 2-3-4.
2:31 - listen to that pan. that build in the music as it goes up her legs. i had this section in the next 1-2-3-4 slot at first, but moved it to utilize those violins/synthesizer/whatever that instrument is. this is such a build in the music, and i wanted to treat it as such, and lace it with intensity and attraction.
2:36 - head on that 1 - *crash*, and then it's 2-3-4. same with the Airborne clips following.
2:42 - I questioned this, and how it would go over. But you know what? I decided I wasn't going to be afraid to push that envelope and be edgy. So... this is exactly what it looks like. I am so sick. Disgusting. Perverted. I meant for that to look like… yeah. AND I WONDERED IF THAT WOULD BE TOO MUCH. But I left it in because you know what. It’s true. We know he thinks of her that way.
2:45 - TIMING. And this is also the "scenes where Cuddy does something cute/hot/flirty and leaves House watching her" section. Tease. She's totally encouraging this crap. She's in a sense ASKING for this stress in her life.
3:00 - House is finally realizing that it’s okay for him to show feeling or whatever, and that’s what this is. BUT THEN SHE WALKS AWAY ANYWAY. Because she’s kind of scared that they might actually WORK. I’m probably making no sense, but. That was the idea there.
3:24 - head on "yeah". Cuddy tries to step away from him - she tries to throw in the towel, albeit with some class, as exemplified by this black and white clip here AND her walking away from the Half-Wit hug.
3:30 - she starts seeing other guys who will “love” her in the more traditional sense, “She Will Be Loved”, but when Lube Guy kisses her she realizes that it’s not right. And it’s boring. And it’s not enough for her. Him and Wilson didn’t do anything wrong, but they just… aren’t right.
3:43 - eye flutter.
3:51 - this part was a bitch, not gonna lie. I can normally tell in my head if something is going to line up or not, and I saw this working, but I couldn't physically get it to line up for the longest time.
3:56 - I feel color on the inside again. I picked this part because she looks like absolute hell, but it's a double zing of awesome because she actually is screaming "House". He's the one destroying her like this.
3:58 - Now he's the one leaving, and apparantly she can't handle that either. It doesn't matter, she doesn't have to. There's another power flip soon anyway.
4:10 - to me, this is him coming to terms with all of it, and what they've both done
4:13 - the “it’s now or never” moment. And each one of you can decide how it ends, but either way, this is Cuddy stepping up and saying that they've got to figure it out. Because neither one of them can go on like this - it's all or nothing.
♥ as always, i'd love to hear your thoughts and questions ♥
HERE'S TO A BRILLIANTLY BEAUTIFUL SEASON!
