I was trying to get some stuff ready to study for history before leaving. If you need short, concise reminders on 3 main topics you should study (i.e. Big Stick, Dollar Diplomacy, Good Neighbor)
PLATT AMENDMENT
• 1903 Theodore Roosevelt
• Gave US the right to intervene and preserve stability
BIG STICK
• By Theodore Roosevelt
• “Speak softly and carry a big stick, and you will go far.”
• Sponsored establishment of large US Navy
• Intervened in disputes re: Alaska and Venezuela
• Reshaped into Roosevelt Corollary (1904)
o US should exercise police power to keep stability in Western hemisphere
o US would consider any interference in LA countries a violation of Monroe Doctrine
o First application: 1905 when Roosevelt sends Marines to Dominican Republic to manage country’s debt to Europe
DOLLAR DIPLOMACY
• President Taft
• 1909-1913
• Like an extension of Roosevelt Corollary to Monroe Doctrine
• Goal: create stability and order abroad to help American interests
• Broaden US foreign interests
• Applied lots in the Caribbean and Central America
• Applied in Central America - justified by saying he was protecting Panama Canal
• Taft got help from J.P. Morgan finance building or RR in China
• Failed to counteract economic instability
• Couldn’t stop revolution in Mexico, Dominican Republic, Nicaragua, and China
• Woodrow Wilson (elected in 1913) - didn’t continue policy
GOOD NEIGHBOR
• Franklin Roosevelt - 1933 (in speech at inauguration)
• Wanted to improve relations with Central and South America
• US emphasized cooperation and trade, not military force to provide stability
• Depression and World War II cause shift in attention away from West
• Wanted to distance US from earlier intervention policies (i.e. Roosevelt Corollary and military interventions in 1910s and 20s).
