“John, I’m really not sure this is a good idea…”

“Relax, Rodney. It’s not like we’re on some alien planet; we’ll be fine,” John said, not even looking back.

How typical. Of course John wasn’t going to listen to him. Rodney sighed, but he had to keep following. Otherwise, Elizabeth might find him and chastise him for not going over to the mainland like he and John were supposed to.

“Hey, come look at this.”

In spite of his worries, Rodney was just curious enough to go and check out what John had discovered. However…

“I don’t see anything,” he said, confused.

John shook his head and pointed. “In there. Look.”

Rodney peered into the crevice John was indicating, and was shocked to discover that he could see trees and grass. What the hell?

“Aren’t we on top of the ocean?” he asked John.

John nodded. “Yeah. Pretty strange to see that kind of thing through a crack in the wall, isn’t it?” Then, before Rodney could say anything to stop him, he reached towards the crevice and started to pull it open.

Rodney might not have been worried - it was just a crack in the wall, right? - but then it started to open. That was when he panicked. “John, maybe you should stop. That might not be safe.”

“We’re on Atlantis, Rodney, how bad could it be?”

“Pretty damned bad!” Rodney flailed his arms, trying to make a point. “We’ve gotten into all sorts of trouble exploring parts of the city that we shouldn’t be in!”

John just shrugged and stepped through the crack. Rodney hesitated, then followed, not having anything better to do with himself. Besides, what if John needed rescuing or something?

As it turned out, they both needed rescuing very shortly. Despite all appearances, the crevice did in fact lead out of the city of Atlantis, and they ended up flailing around in the water two floors below. It was by sheer luck that John’s radio still worked.

“This - is just a wonderful - discovery of yours,” Rodney snapped at John through chattering teeth. “Just great!”

“Shut up, Rodney,” said John grumpily, throwing his radio up onto a nearby balcony, where it promptly broke.
