“There’s really nothing I can do,” said Jennifer softly.
Elizabeth nodded slowly, but her expression was sad. “I understand.”
Jennifer watched her. She knew the expedition leader hated to lose any of her people, but Elizabeth had spent rather a lot of time beside this particular person’s bed, and she was beginning to suspect a special bond. “Are you all right, Elizabeth?” she asked finally.
There was silence for a long moment, and Jen wasn’t sure Elizabeth would answer. When she did, her voice was steady.
“I will be.”
She walked back to Dr. Branton’s bed. Jennifer watched in silence.
