Hi Lissa, I can see I am going to learn a lot about Haldir from you. This is an unusual look at life in Lothlorien and one I enjoyed very much. I find I am often drawn to stories about the every day workings of life in Middle-earth and how the Galadhrim grow their food isn't something I've seen written about before. Beautifully done.

Thank you, Inzilbeth! I certainly aim at staying true to what canon we have on Wood-elves in general and Haldir in particular (except for Haldir's looks - I borrowed them from PJ ...)

Unfortunately, we don't know much about daily life of Elves, especially not the Wood-elf variety; on the other hand, that does leave much room for a fanfic writer. :-)

All the little fics here on my LJ are parts of a rather long story; atm I'm slowly working my way through (/rewriting) the first part which is about Haldir's childhood. Still lots of pieces missing in between, though.

I really like this tale ... Tolkien gave us so little to go on with the elves' daily lives, but you know they *had* to have done more than sing, fight, have feasts, do the occasional odd bit of healing, look into the future and talk to trees. They had to eat, therefore they had to plant crops. I like your take on young Haldir--the bit where he's laying in the grass just enjoying his sanctuary was nicely done. It showed a young elfling enjoying the plants and trees and flowers without making him seem overly feminine, which is something that I have to say seems to be a pitfall in writing elves--finding a way to write warriors who are sensitive and love nature is a bit of a balancing act and a lot of writers don't manage it as well as you have here.

The only mention of where the food came from that I can recall right now, was that they hunted - but that would not provide nearly enough food for a population as large as the one in Lothlórien - and then that there were fields around Nargothrond (L&C also mentions that among the noldor, the 'nissi are often more skilled in the tending of fields and gardens ( ... )

Definitely nice traits ... and really, in my take on the word "masculine", kindness, protectiveness and caring are must haves. Otherwise you have someone who's selfish, self-absorbed, mean, petty ... you name it. In other words, not a real man. Or elf. ;)

So true!!! 'My' Haldir runs into some problems, but turns out quite well after all.

Thank you, Medea. :-)

Yes, that's Rúmil on the way. Bronwe was in early pregnancy during the Orc incident. That affair put a scare in Haldir who's been on best behaviour ever since.

I was thinking the Elves can't have lived solely on lembas and moonlight. The easiest way to get food would have been a bit of discreet barter with nearby human settlements (this takes place several hundred years before LOTR, in case you wonder about a discrepancy here).
