NIU is my alum mater, and I still have friends there, so this is just plain close to home. While this is saying only one person (the shooter) is dead, I've heard there are at least two deaths...
18 shot at Northern Illinois University
Estimates of nearly twenty people being shot at a Chicago university are this morning reported, with local media suggesting a gunman had entered a classroom at the Northern Illinois University and opened fire.
Police say that the gunman has now turned the gun on himself, with the man confirmed dead following the violent outbreak.
The University's website was now advising students and staff to stay away from the campus following the shooting.
"It has been confirmed that there has been a shooting on campus and several people have been taken away by ambulance." it said.
Police have been unable to confirm any deaths at the University, saying only that wounded students had been taken from the university campus.
CNN reported earlier that as many as 18 people had been wounded by the gunman, with students who witnessed the outbreak saying that about 140 others were inside the classroom or lecture hall at the time of the shooting.
It has also been reported that the gunman had entered the campus with both a shotgun and a pistol.
