I was just reading an article on the CBC website about the upcoming mosquito spraying that's set to begin this Friday. I hate mosquitoes as much as the next person, but I have some serious misgivings about the use of the chemical malathion, which has been banned in many parts of Canada (but apparently, we have a surplus supply of it here). At any rate, the spraying is set to begin, so get ready for the departure of the mosquitoes...and all the beneficial insects too, for that matter. Farewell to the bumblebees et al.
Once I'd finished the article, I decided to take a gander at the comments that people had posted. Since it's the CBC, I expected the comments to be somewhat more liberal-leaning than the comments I've seen on the CTV website. But no, most people were going on and on about bringing on the chemicals. And there was one person, woefully uninformed, who said that it's not like the spraying harms the environment or its inhabitants in any way.
Um, what? Have you forgotten that they're spraying this chemical around to KILL THINGS? And it won't just kill the mosquitoes, as I have already mentioned. I'd say that the mass death of a group of living things is certainly a form of harming the environment. Stupid person.
