As per tradition my New Year's post is not on New Years. It's a tad later than usual but still, I've never been the best at doing these year end posts at a decent time. My excuse this year is the usual New Year's festivities followed promptly by a cold. I spent much of Monday trying to take it easy and drinking oceans of tea and Tuesday was spent pretty much asleep. I'm not doing much better today, but I figure I'll try to get this done before I fall asleep again.
So another year ended and we've begun another. 2012 is supposedly the year the world ends - if all the conspiracy theorists are right - so we've got until December to live life. Let's make it count people!
Okay so 2011 - was a rough year for me.
I spent most of it unemployed, sending out applications to any retail establishment I could find (don't even get me started on why the Graphic Design BFA is working retail), and trying to bury myself in artwork. That sort of worked to a point, though I think some of my emotional stress was starting to show a bit in the art towards the end.
Then there was the point when I was told I had a job, but they waited like 8 weeks before calling me in to train me or anything. That was a very frustrating time for me since I felt like I was in limbo.
Though there were some good things this year.
First off - I DID get the job in the end. While the job is only part time and isn't much it does help my self worth immensely and the steady flow of income is nice.
My nephew was born in July. There were lots of scares and concerns since he was born premature. But in the end everything worked out fine and he's a perfectly fine healthy baby boy. I'm not a good judge of children but people inform me he is an adorable baby.
Conventions - I didn't do as many as I wanted and they didn't do as well as I'd hoped. But I did take some chances and tried some new venues, which is always rewarding in its own right. You get to see new places and meet new people.
This also marked the first year the apprentice traveled with me for con season which was fun and she hasn't run off screaming yet so I think that worked out. Though it sort of still surprises me when people treat me like I know what I'm doing.
Business wise - not many changes occurred. There was an increase in commission work this year, which is always good. I did get the online shop set up though it is less than a roaring success. Though this year did mark the sixth anniversary of me operating Foolish Mortal. Here's hoping for many more.
That said - 2011 was a year of changes and transitions. Here's hoping that 2012 brings more and some better luck.
