All hail friends, who provide content

We've been tossing around stuff on modern fantasy in this journal long enough that it has its own tag, and eseme and I have talked about the difference between fantasy novels and erotica-masquerading-as-fantasy, sort of segueing into that "romantic fantasy" genre. The whole idea is sort of central to me, both because I read an buy a lot of fantasy & modern fantasy books (not so much with the "romantic fantasy," but some of it slips through) (and, yes eseme reads more, and buys more, than I do. Probably kitf0x does, too. He certainly used to), and because it's in the realm of stuff I want to get published writing.

Today, visgoth posted about Paranormal Romance as a book category - which, in the thread that ensued, led to me learning about YAABIs ("Yet another Anita Blake Inconsistency"), and, further down the same thread... "time travel romance."

The questions thus spawned are, I suppose:
  • do "we" disdain Paranormal Romance (or whatever you want to call it - Modern Fantasy Erotica or vampire porn) because of the awful example LHK has given us? (I LARP & write fiction about my games, so I can't disdain Paranormal Romance too much, of course)
  • Have you encountered "Time travel romance" before, or other forms of pre-Anita-Blake Paranormal Romance?
