update 2007

omg i totally forgot livejournal existed. I think at some point i decided that i would start posting on the myspace blog...but then i realized that all these people who only kind of know me would be reading my entries to judge my character and making decisions about whether or not to be my friend/future roommate/ex-girlfriend stalker/future boyfriend based solely on how i felt that week. it was really too much.

but, now that college is over (and i'm stuck in the memphis airport for five hours), i feel that it is time to reconnect. with at least one update.

so here's where i'm at:

I graduated from Hampshire College in May. It was wonderful and I am so glad to be done. Our graduation was the most entertaining official ceremony that I have ever had to attend. My last semester of school was ideal and exactly what I had always hoped college was be. (p.s. did any of you notice how college was in no way as exciting or informative as governor's school was? i was just thinking about how disappointed I was when i got to real college. maybe it's because i was 17 and completely naive when i was on governor's school)

After graduating, i did some minor shifting of locations and boxes and ended up in chicago, il. I have been living with Justin Fernandez (we're like "dating" again) in my sister's apartment while she has been in little rock for the summer. the apartment is really nice. i don't know how she ended up getting a way sweeter apartment than i have ever lived in as her very first place, but i think that it must have spoiled her and she will now never be able to adopt the student live-like-dirt lifestyle. this is lucky for her.

While in Chicago, I have been working and taking a class. I started off doing AV production stuff, getting paid $20/ hr. That was sweet but the hours started early and the boss was unreliable. So I quit. Then I started takign a course to get certified to teach english. it was 1 month 5 days/week -8 hrs/day. so it was pretty much like a job. During this time I took morning workshops on how to be a teacher and in the afternoons taught my very own class. These afternoon experiences led me to believe that I will, in fact be able to (and will enjoy very much) doing this teacher thing for a while. It's really exciting and truly rewarding. plus it's cool to have an occupation. I am a teacher.
During this course, I also worked as a wiatress, but that's completely un-noteworthy.

Now the summer is over, as so is my course. Justin is moving to Washington D.C. to work for NPR and I am moving to Berlin to teach english (and hang out). The job market in Germany sucks, but I feel confident that I will work something out.

Oh also, my grandmother died this summer. No need to say sorry, I feel ok about it now. I'm mentioning this because of what came as a result. When she died, she left all the grand kids 1000 dollars to take a trip anywhere they want. which, i think, is the best thing to leave for someone in a will, ever. I definitely would like to do that for my grandkids.
So, thanks to Mimi..
On my way to Berlin, I am going to go to Egypt for a week to see the pyramids and check out non-Western culture for the first time. I'm visiting a friend from college who has been there teaching english for a while. I am more excited about this trip than I have ever been about a trip...ever. I'M GOING TO SEE THE FUCKING PYRAMIDS! eff you, Europe...now THAT'S history.

As for long term plans, here are some things I would really like to do (or begin doing) in the next five years:

-Live and Teach in Taiwan or Korea or Japan - Learn an Asian Language
-Live and Teach in Argentina - Learn Spanish
-Live and Teach in the Middle East - Learn Arabic

-Volunteer in the Peace Corps
-Volunteer for Habitiat for Humanity - Learn to build shit

-Make an American Roadtrip movie during the 2008 elections about a girl whose birthday is on Sept 11 and who didn't see the towers fall - focus on theme "how to be an effective citizen"

-Make a movie about being in High School and deciding if you should stick with your roots or split

-Work on an American political campaign

-Go to grad school for something related to international development/policy

-Teach or work as staff for arkansas governor's school (i got the AV and media specialist positions on lock)

I'm sure these plans will change a thousand times before those five years happen. but here's where I'm at right now.

there's so much to do in the world.

I think that's all for this update.

I'm in the country until aug 27. call me before i leave?
