Nah, no serious things. There's too much of that out there: angst, Serious Issues, war. (And I'm as guilty as the next person on that count.) It's hard to read after a while.

But I also love the fact that this is light without being sweet or fluffy! I know this started off with a comment about snark, and how I liked the brittle relationship between Pansy and Draco, but here it's Herminone and Pansy being combative and calling each other on things and Ginny and Luna being dry and sarcastic and Harry and Draco teasing each other a little meanly. Fabulous! (Although Harry-with-an-edge took a little getting use to--he's always so earnest in my mind.)

Anyways, the point of all of this being: sometimes fanfic seems to come in such a limited palette emotionally, all sweetness or angst or sexual tension, and this is something different altogether. Which I like enormously. It's how I imagine these characters acting as young adults, breezy and self-confident and clever and feeling on top of the world without being sentimental at all.

Loved "Who said anything about you coming?" Draco raised an eyebrow and pressed Harry's hand to the bulge in his trousers. "Haven't you learned by now, Potter, that it's always all about me?' and also "Oh, really. I can't imagine why. Nothing to do with your hand being there, I don't suppose. Must be the thought of gilt edged invitations."

And yay femslash! No het in sight! The best. (smile)

Thanks so much, liseuse! It was a delight to see this on your LJ today. Maggie

The tone of this is called "playing to my best advantage", I always want to write about serious things, but never manage and I can't write schmoop to save my life, so I stick to the snark.

As for Harry-with-an-edge - I can see him becoming that Harry once the war is over and he gets a chance to relax a little. Realises he doesn't necessarily need to be earnest all the time.

the brittle relationship between Pansy and Draco - huh, I'm not saying it isn't, I just didn't intend it to come off as brittle exactly. More genuine affection buried under a lot of needling and exact knowledge of each other's pressure points.

Possibly the result of my reading for much of my young adult-age being Evelyn Waugh and P.G. Wodehouse.

I'm ever so glad you liked this. Now for all the other fic I am supposed to be writing. The list just keeps getting longer. Eeep.

So much the better, hm? I love the characters, and it's great when people do them well, but really what I want to do is read a story with a strong story-telling voice.

More genuine affection buried under a lot of needling and exact knowledge of each other's pressure points.

Just what I wanted to say. Strike "brittle." (*smile*)

So reading this coincided with signing off on Project #1 (a catalogue entry, only 2,000 words but so damn time-consuming!). Yay! Project #2 (an article) isn't *ahem* quite done yet, but it's getting there. Wish I attacked academic projects with the same enthusiasm as I have for fan-fiction.

Anyways, wanted to let you know the encouragement worked. Thank you! M.

Aww, I'm glad that the encouragement has worked. And yes, I'd have got firsts in everything if I'd spent as much time on it as I did on reading (and occasionally) writing, and betaing and Britpicking fan-fic. Oh well, I enjoyed it.

And awww, strong story-telling voice. I want to put this on my CV now.
