A fun little story from French class

May 16, 2008 13:53

The prof gave us this story in French, and I'm sure it exists out there somewhere in English, but I'll just give you my quick translation:

A poor maiden named Sophie is madly in love with Gregoire, a man who lives in a village on the other side of a river filled with ravenous crocodiles. Gregoire accepts her proposal to marry, but he doesn't want to leave his village. In order to live with the man of her dreams, Sophie has to find a way to cross the river without being eaten by the crocodiles.

There is only one boat in the village, and it belongs to a nasty old man named Jules. He agrees to take her across the river, but only if she first spends one night with him in bed. Sophie doesn't want to accept such a dishonest proposition, so she finds her best friend Christophe and asks for his help. Christophe listens to her story, but finally he shrugs his shoulders and tells her, "What do you want me to say? It's your problem and it's your job to find a solution. I can't do anything about it."

Not knowing what to do, Sophie goes back to Jules, spends the night with him in bed, and is finally able to reach Gregoire the next day. But when Gregoire learns of the fashion in which she was able to get to his village, he doesn't want to marry her anymore and sends her home, ashamed and full of dispair.

Rank the characters (Sophie, Gregoire, Jules, and Christophe) in numerical order. Make number 1 the person of whom you approve the most, and 4 the person of whom you disapprove the most.

I won't tell you what my answers are, or what your answers mean until I get at least a few comments. I find it very interesting. So... Who's the best and who's the worst??
