Get a notebook just for writing down ideas. If you don't give it a shot you'll never know. Obviously don't quit your day job ;P Other than that be prepared for mucho rejection from publishers. Network as much as possible. Set yourself up website and list it on Pages Unbound. From there you should be able to get an editor or two and see how it goes. I'd bet that junior publishers are checking that site and similiar sites. Pages is one hell of a time waster too, always something to check out. Another site I like is Beyond the Far Horizon. You will have to register to access Beyond, but I've never gotten spam from them. It's run by an author who goes by the pen name of Gina Marie Wylie. An author I think is very good, if you like the magic/fantasy genre anyway, is James Galloway. Fair warning, his stuff is engrossing so don't start it unless you have some time. He's not perfect by any means, but a professional editing team could probably make his stuff saleable, except he's published it online and anyone can just download it... Anyway those are just a couple examples of places on the web I know of where people are writing.
As for what I think about during the day it all depends... If I see something that I think would make a good picture while I'm out w/o the camera then it's damn, don't have the camera with me. If I see an attractive woman...*smirk* Part of every day I marvel at how all the morons around me manage to survive...and think universal birth control should be mandatory :P And every now and then something will click, and I think I should write about it. But it takes too much time to actually do so, this is part of why I rarely reply to journal entries too. I'm very perfectionistic and a paragraph will take me hours to tweak into sounding how I want it to. Sometimes I dream about what I'd do with 10's of millions of dollars from a lottery win. Other times I go over what's in the house ingredients wise so I can decide what to cook for dinner. When I'm tired it's what do I have to do before I can go to sleep. I reckon that everyone has their moments, but for some they are more often than others. I think a lot about my love and wonder how she's doing at that moment :)
Anyway, if you are constantly coming up with potential story ideas I suspect you should give writing a go, even if you never sell a damn thing.
I shook your head a little and look what came spilling out ;)
Its not so much that I keep thinking of new ideas, although that does happen occasionally, as that I keep thinking of the same three or four ideas on a continual basis. Like I keep adding to them in my head. I have tried a notebook, and it just doesn't work for me. I have had the pretty great ability of remembering pretty much everything I have wanted to remember in regard to the specific story ideas. Its just every time I sit down to write them, I get pretty discouraged, or distracted, or just plain down, so I don't do it. I know, I know... I will never fail or succeed if I don't try, but there is just so many other factors in play.
Thank you for the online info, I will check it out.
*chuckle* Be careful what you wish for and such ;)
I can't for the life of me remember the title, but there is one book in particular that I've read about being referenced by multiple people about writing. I'll ask my gf tonight if she has any recommendations, she teaches HS English. Anyway if you don't have and or haven't read a book on how to write stories that might be a good idea too. Like most things I reckon you have to just decide to do it, without you making a commitment because you want to it isn't going to happen no matter what else is going on. If you like I'll be happy to read whatever and give you an opinion at least. Online is a great way to go in the beginning at least. Before you post anything make sure you've taken appropriate steps to protect your copy right though. Also keep in mind that anything you post online is unlikely to ever be saleable. Let me know if I can babble at you about anyhting else :)
Oh thanks... but I graduated with an english degree... I've taken several creative writing courses including an upper level indepedent study, one on one course, with a published creative writing professor... I know HOW to write.. just wish I knew if I could really make a living out of it. I am actually not so thrilled about "publishing" stories online, just for the reason that you said... they aren't really sellable after that... I honestly want it all... a contract... paperback deals... the whole shabang... that's pretty much what keeps me from just doing it. I know... its silly and even selfish, but that's just how I am.
