especially since it's not up to them but up to the states anyway, they both missed an opportunity not to look like total jerks and just point out the irrelevence of the question.

yeah, but even being married in CA affords me and my wife very little concessions. NM recognizes it, but barely... and the federal government doesn't recognize it really at all...
And the states are so slow in coming around, if at all, to giving gay couples any rights at all.
Big business has recognized homosexual couples rights for quite some time (we were getting benefits through Qwest five years ago) but the government just won't come around... its so frustrating.

i'm glad you at least have the (admittedly) small benefit of being in california. texas will probably allow gay marriage eventually. that was a joke.

as far as benefits packages go, i think anybody should be able to qualify. if you are single and live with your sister, why shouldn't she be able to be on your insurance as a domestic partner? not only are people sometimes penalized for being gay, they are almost always penalized for not having found love at all.

That is VERY true about love... not everyone finds someone. People have to pay for benefits anyway, its not like its completely free, so they should let others get benefits... I agree.

I live in NM, but we drove to CA to get married (because it was legalized there, but still not here). But fortunally NM is one of the few states that doesn't have a ban, and will recognize the marriage, to a point, for like visitation rights, and legal documents... but not for taxes or anything like that. I guess that is something. We both have our own benefits through our jobs so that's not an issue, but there have been times when I was in school and it was SO nice to be able to be on her benefits through work.

I quit working to go to school full-time and thank goodness it was only $30/month to add me to my husband's health insurance. I've gone without, before, and it's ridiculous. So much to worry about, even if nothing bad actually happens.

All right, NM isn't as many delegates but please vote anyway. If McCain wins we seriously might have to move to Canada.

LOL, yeah not as many delegates, but still a swing state.
Most people are pretty liberal here, but people just get sick of some big government issues, so they go with the damn republicans.

Yeah, being able to be added to someone's health insurance is so nice...

And that is so cool about school, what are you going for?

I'm already done, went back and got a BBA in accounting. Am doing absolutely nothing with it, of course. I was 8 months' pregnant when I finished my last semester and haven't worked yet. Right now I'm 7 weeks' pregnant and probably won't work until well after this one arrives. I spent way too many years becoming educated to spend my days as a housewife, but there you have it. My long-term goal is to open a nonprofit nursing home in rural Kansas with my husband as the pharmacist and me as the administrator. I'm starting to think about volunteering at a well-run nursing home around here just to get an idea of how the whole thing works. But that'll have to wait until the morning sickness phase passes.

How about you?

Wow, well congrats on the upcoming new arrival!
I know what you mean about being a housewife, but the kids will get older, and it'll be easier to go back to work, and then you won't have to stress/debate about having kids as you get older cause you will already have them!

I have my BA in English, and like you, I'm not really doing anything with it. I work at Verizon Wireless as a trainer, and have been there for over two years and a trainer for over a year. Its okay, but I would love to go back to school to get my masters to teach at the college level. But I like making money and not having to worry about paying my bills... maybe eventually.

SO, why Kansas? Is that where you are from?

Thanks :) The kids getting older might not help so much for me, though, because my husband is adamant about wanting to homeschool. Not for religious reasons or anything, but just because it's so possible to get through public school and still be completely uneducated. We want to have renaissance kids, not No Child Left Behind kids, you know ( ... )

Sorry about that, my lj just decided to crap out on me and I couldn't get back in last night ( ... )

That sounds like a really great program to get into teaching. I'm positive my school didn't have anything like that.

You can't base everything on money! How will you ever get tenure if you don't get started?

I'm supposed to become a CPA now but I really enjoyed being a secretary. Never would have bothered finishing school, probably, except that we decided to have kids and I wouldn't be able to support them on what I was qualified to earn.

If all I had to worry about for the time being was the ability to support myself, and I had help, I would LOVE to be able to do something I really wanted.

I feel like the childlike empress. Bastian! Why don't you do what you dream??

LOL, sorry been out of the lj/computer world for the past couple of days...
If I was really gonna do what I dreamed it would be a writer. Which I work on from time to time, but I've spent too much of my life wondering where my next meal may come from, that I just don't want to do that... at least not for awhile. I like what I am doing well enough now that I am OK with working and not having to worry about how to pay my bills.
Once I pay some things off, school will be MUCH easier to handle and much more rewarding.

So, if you could do anything, what would it be?
Is you husband a pharmacist now?
I am sure that kids kind of change everything, especially financially. One day we would love to have kids, but don't think we are quite ready yet.

If I could do anything I wanted to do, I'd be a proofreader. Preferably of interesting books but that is a want and not a need. My husband is a pharmacist, he graduated right before we got married.

You are right about kids changing everything! Mine is throwing various packages of food at me right now. I think this might mean that she wants another snack. Ok, while I typed that she started pulling trash out of the can and waving it madly in the air. Gotta go!

Ut oh! She does seem to like to get your attention with trying to destroy things.
I guess you will definitely have to get her a snack, huh?
That's too funny, though I am sure not so fun to clean up.

I've taken several classes where I have had to proofread other students' work and most of the time it was pretty cool. But some people write STRANGE things. I prefer to write more than read, though I do appreciate the insight that reading can give.
Read anything interesting (already published) lately?

She has now had some crackers, mandarin oranges, and raisins. Most of them ended up on the floor, but at least they made her happy for a little while. Luckily I can just leave it there because the three dogs will take care of it next time they are in the living room.

The last thing I read was Candy Freak. Someone recommended it so I gave it a shot. But I didn't like it much. Didn't like the way the guy wrote, he didn't remove himself from it at all. First person writing is fine, but it felt like he was showing off a lot.

To be honest, I can't remember the last new thing I read that I liked! That's not really a shocker, though, because I re-read much more than I read.

How about you? Any recommendations?

Oh, what kind of dogs do you have. They can be so good for cleaning up messes. I know my two doggies are.

The last book I read was Stephen King's The Stand. I like the movie and wanted to see how the book was. Its a lot different, and so much more to it. I am really glad I read it.

I can recommend quite a few books that I've read through for school and just on my own, which you may have already read a few of:
Giovonni's Room by James Baldwin, Flowers for Algernon by Daniel Keyes, I am the Cheese and The Bumblebee Flies Anyway by Robert Cormier - they are more young adult novels, but very good and Dandelion Wine by Ray Bradbury.

Let me know if you have have read any of those.
