2012 was the Year of
the Unresolution--the year of trying to be goalless, and just doing things that made me happy.
... it went pretty well, actually. And I Created Things this year, too--thus proving to me that I won't entirely sit around like a slug when given permission to. Then again, deadlines help a great deal, and I had a few of those helping me out this year.
Without further ado, bullet points!
- Accomplishment #1 is definitely finishing my Dragaera LARP, Cracks in the Orb, and running it at SLAW. In the process I probably wrote a novel's worth of content, although it's really hard to be certain with Vellum.
- I wrote a couple of other short fiction pieces, too - a silly fic based on my run of King's Musketeers, and "The Battle of Christ's-Mass," an alternate history piece
- I wrote my bustle treatise, and presented it as a panel at the first NELCO. I also wrote essays on cast list secrecy and the social contract of LARPing of which I was particularly proud.
- I also taught a Beginning Sewing for LARP workshop at NELCO
- I played in 26 LARPs, one of them a weekend-long, King's Musketeers
- I helped to run two LARPs--High Rollers and The Garden of Forking Paths
- I wrote one of the factions (Team Something Blue) in Mission: Engaged, the guerilla larp for natbudin and v_cat's wedding reception.
- I made... some amount of progress on Gods and Fathers.
- I took a few seven-week sessions of introductory fencing, but ultimately decided not to continue.
- I read seventeen new-to-me books. That's a relatively low number--even for the slow reader I usually am--but I also re-read some of my favorites (the first two Company novels, the first two Khaavren Romances, Dragon, etc). Notably, I also didn't read much self-help dreck.
- I traveled to England to participate in Consequences, my first international LARP con. I also visited Windsor Castle while I was there, which was hugely exciting to me as a history nerd.
- I traveled to Montréal and went to the Biodome and the Botanical Garden. Less far afield, I also went to the Butterfly Place in Westford, which was still an amazing nature experience.
- I made an 1880s waist and skirt for HMS Eden, and a 15th century gamurra for Venezia
- I played a lot of SWTOR, and got my Scoundrel, Jjaro to max level, and discovered I love healing in the process. I know, it's silly.
- I knitted a pair of socks for my dad (which I still need to send to him... dammit)
There's probably more I'm forgetting, but that's enough resting on my laurels for now. All in all I'm highly satisfied with the accomplishments and milestones, both large and small, that this year has wrought.
So... what's on the schedule for 2013? I'm still pondering that. A lack of resolutions worked pretty well for me this year! On the other hand...
I want to write. Specifically, I want to write more regularly and in greater quantity than I already do. I want to establish the habit of creating before I consume. I want to finish something I consider to be publishable. I want to get into and attend
Viable Paradise, the sf/fantasy writer's workshop on Martha's Vineyard with awesome authors, including Brust.
Let's go.
