- My dad came to visit this weekend, and built us a new set of stairs for our screen house! While he was working on that, Matt and I got a lot of work done around the house in preparation for our July 4th party.
- Speaking of my party, holy crap, right now we have 32 Yes and 17 Maybe responses (and I know there are some unaccounted for +1s in there). That is definitely more than I've ever had before.
I haven't finalized the menu yet, but I will say this: THERE MAY NOT BE STRAWBERRY SHORTCAKE. We had a terribly short season this year; it started late due to damp weather, and the 100-degree weather last week brought it to a rapid close. We got one week of strawberries in our CSA, and while Dick's and Lanni's still have some, I don't think there are going to be any left in ten days. And I refuse to make strawberry shortcake from non-local berries.
But I believe blueberries and raspberries will be in season by then, and, if we're lucky, maybe even peaches. So there could still be delicious fruit crisps and cobblers...
- I've started poking around more at the various Accelerant boffer LARPs that are starting next year. I was initially turned off by Cottington Woods, but as I've poked at the materials more, I've become more interested. I kind of imagine a character a lot like my Crown of Hearts character would fit in here, as some kind of curmudgeonly woodwitch/herbalist with a lot of inspiration from Baba Yaga, i.e. a "very good witch--very good at being a witch." Like Carrokill, and like Baba Yaga, it would be a good way to be an information broker, and make myself useful, and therefore plot.
Of course, maybe everyone else wants to be a Baba Yaga-type character. I don't know. Woodwitch didn't seem that popular by the poll, though.
- I also started poking at Clockwork Skies and Shadows of Amun, but they don't start nearly as soon as Cottington (spring 2013 vs. summer/fall 2012 for a test game), so I am less pressed for time. I have the barest outline of a character I want to play that could fit in either of these settings.
From the moment I met her, only passingly, in the Nell Gwynne's stories, I loved Herbertina Lovelock. I love the--hm. I'm going to borrow a term from the designers of the
Prada men's Fall 2012 collection, and call it the "parody of male power"-- she engenders. A description:
Herbertina Lovelock, on the other hand, was a very good boy, with the appearance of a cupid-faced lad fresh from a public school whereat a number of outre vices were practiced. She wore male attire exclusively, cropped hair pomaded sleek. She also smoked cigars, read the sporting papers with her feet on the fender, and occasionally went to the races. At Nell Gwynne's she had a wardrobe full of military uniforms both Army and Navy, all with very tight trousers with padding sewn into the knees.
... I just read this to Matt, and he said, "So... Integra Hellsing as a whore?"
"Well, I was thinking of ditching the whore part."
"So... just Integra, by a different name?"
Really, I just want to play a woman in a jaunty 1910s military uniform, and have a way to put my fencin' skills to use in a boffer setting. I blame... all kinds of things for this. Herbertina Lovelock. That aforementioned Prada collection. Tom Hiddleston as a sad-eyed, doomed cavalry captain in Warhorse. I'M NOT PARTICULAR.
Um. I should stop talking now, huh?
... Oh! One more thing. I finished the first character sheet for Cracks, that of the Empress Cherova III, under whose reign we are in this time period 900 years before the Interregnum. Yaaaaay!
Oh! Yet another thing! Many of you may already know, I'm going to be the delightful Milady de Winter, headmistress of a finishing school that bears her name, in the Story Wars AU campaign game. I look forward to torrid romance and no one trusting me. Yay!
