L'histoire

I have the feeling some of you (okay, maybe three of you) might be interested in this NPR piece I was listening to yesterday:

The 'Ghosts' of Rome's Loss at Cannae

It's an interview with Robert L. O'Connell, a military historian, about his book The Ghosts of Cannae: Hannibal and the Darkest Hour of the Roman Republic.

Of course, I was largely interested because it discusses Hannibal and Scipio Africanus, who are characters in Drifters, Hirano's new manga. *ducks*

There was also an interesting discussion following a call by an American History teacher about how to make history approachable for students. I liked the author's approach that history should be taught as interesting stories, not a list of dates and places. I remember when I first became interested in history - when I stayed with my parents' friend Victor when my dad had his first bypass, who told me fascinating stories about Napoleon, the Tudors, Catherine the Great, etc. It was definitely the first time anyone made history interesting for me.
