Ahhhh this book. I'm trying to finish it, but it's so not what it claims to be. And neither is the heroine. Supposed to be intelligent, feisty, and whatnot, but in reality she's indecisive, stupid and she never says anything worth reading.
And all the times there is some build-up (or so you think), it deflates with a big hiss - like one line at the end of this ominous paragraph when they decide not to go to the place where all those bad things just described might happen. There's no weigh-off. Just: these are all the bad things, and then: but they decided not to.
Actions in the book aren't logical at all. The type of continuing to run in the middle of the road in films when you're being pursued by a car. Except they do it on horseback in this book, because it's set in the late 18th century or so. 'Oh, we're being pursued, I can see them behind us, let's have dinner at this house where they're really unprepared for us and it will take ages! and make such a fuss that everyone will remember us'.
I also hope they were smarter in the 18th century than to send British spies into France who did not speak a word of French. (-> a point is made of the heroine needing to take control in ordering food because of this. Apparently it's supposed to add to her admirable superwoman qualities, but it just detracts from them. I mean, a really intrepid heroine would just order, instead of seemingly finding it daunting or special.)
The dialogue is uninspiring. People don't finish conversations, and sometimes not even sentences. The point of some utterances evades me.
Off to bed to read more now.
