Character Info
Real Name: Fran Jackson
Codename: Kiara
Age: 27
Unit & Position: Pridelands - Medic
Skills:
-Qualified EMT/medic
-15+ years martial arts training
Height: 178cm // 5'10"
Weight: 70kg // 155lbs
Build: Skinny, but more solid than she looks.
General appearance/style of dress: Day to day she'll favour jeans, flats, and probably a nice blouse. She has a particular liking for big knitted cardigans. On the job it's trainers, cargo pants, and a sturdy jacket. Normally she wears her hair loose; when working or training she'll braid it or put it in a bun to keep it out of the way.
Backstory: Fran - née Frances Abigail Lynch - was born and raised in Lisburn, Northern Ireland. The second of three children, she made up for being the normally-overlooked middle child by being everywhere and in at everything. School and studies she was only sporadically interested in, but she approached every and any form extracurricular activity with enthusiasm. Usually short-lived enthusiasm, admittedly, but enthusiasm nonetheless. The only things that really managed to hold her attention were football (Captain of the St Patrick's Academy Girls' Under-18s, thank you very much) and Muay Thai.
Whether due to the onset of something resembling maturity, or just the alarming realisation that she had no idea what she was going to do with her life, in her last two years of high school she finally buckled down and pulled some pretty good grades out of the air. Through a combination of a good reference and the interview going very well, she managed to get a place to study medicine at Newcastle University.
While at university she met and started dating Lewis Jackson, an american CS student studying abroad. Despite their relative youth it was a remarkably happy and stable relationship; as a matter of fact, it survived something Fran's academic career didn't. Near the end of her second year her father died unexpectedly. She missed a significant proportion of the semester back in Lisburn to be the with family, and unsurprisingly failed her exams quite spectacularly. She elected to drop out.
After a few long months she surprised everyone by abruptly moving back to Newcastle and approaching the medical profession from a rather different angle. Two years later she graduated as a fully qualified paramedic and went straight to work on the ambulances. At the same time Lewis graduated and his student visa promptly expired. Unable to stay in Newcastle, he moved back to the US.
They tried long-distance, but not seeing each other outside of occasional short visits was making them miserable. They both tried to find a way to immigrate to the other's respective country, but were unsuccessful. And so it was that one such visit led to them taking the only readily apparent solution. Her mother was a little put out that she didn't get to attend the spontaneous wedding, but...well. She got over it.
Fran moved to the city where Lewis was working IT, and managed to get a job as a paramedic without too much trouble. And for a while everything was wonderful.
Except before long she started to notice something a bit- off about her new in-laws. She might have noticed sooner if not for the fact that Lewis had as little as possible to do with his family while still staying on speaking terms. Something which Fran, coming from a large and very close-knit family, couldn't wrap her head around at all. He tended to get evasive whenever she tried to bring it up in conversation.
The truth came out when one night they were woken by a frantic 4am phone call from Lewis' cousin, begging him to drag his paramedic wife out of bed and downtown. His brother was badly injured, needed medical attention urgently...and they couldn't risk a hospital. In the middle of removing a goddamn bullet from her brother-in-law's shoulder in the most primitive conditions she'd ever had to work in, Fran finally found out the truth. That her husband's family were up to their collective necks in organised crime.
Eventually she forgave Lewis for not telling her sooner and life continued much as before, give or take the odd instance of playing mob doctor. And it might have done so indefinitely if the company Lewis was working for hadn't suddenly gone bust. It left them struggling financially, and...well, where was the harm in him doing a little work for his family, just to keep them going until he found something else? Except he never did successfully manage to find something else. And Fran was absolutely adamant that she wasn't letting him do it alone, not after some of the injuries she'd had to treat on other members of the family. And so as time went by they found themselves sucked ever deeper into the criminal underworld.
Cut to January 2013. A job gone horribly wrong. Lewis gunned down where he stood, and Fran - still frantically trying to stem the bleeding with what pitifully inadequate tools she had to hand - dragged shrieking and cursing away from her husband's body. In a holding cell at the local police station she learned that she was to be charged and tried alongside her surviving in-laws.
It was there that a 'business' acquaintance appeared in her cell, posing as a state-appointed lawyer, and told her what to do and what to say to stay out of jail. Told her about an organisation called Grimm who might just be interested in employing someone of her talents. And might just be able to put her in a position to exact some creative revenge on the people who killed her husband.
Shortly thereafter Fran took the stand and sobbed while telling the heart-wrenching story of her husband's unexplained absences, of how she had suspected him of having an affair. Of how she had followed him one night and stumbled upon the deal which had gone bad, arriving just in time to see him shot. All the while her 'lawyer' nodded encouragingly, and then spoke eloquently in her defense. She was a victim in this, surely the jury could see that?
She left the courtroom a free woman. And from there it was straight to the Grimm compound to take her promised place as Pridelands' new medic.
Personality: Fran approaches things with enthusiasm - she's the kind of person who never gives less than 100%. Of course her enthusiasm may not necessarily last. The apartment she shared with her husband was littered with relics of hobbies long since given up on. But anything which does manage to hold her interest will receive absolutely her full attention and efforts. The most notable interests which she has now devoted a great deal of time to are Muay Thai, and football (or "soccer" as people over here insist on calling it).
She's very stubborn. She forms opinions - of people, situations, and near everything else - very quickly, and it takes a lot to budge her once she's made her mind up. She can be overconfident and is often reluctant to admit it when she's wrong about something.
Partly due to natural inclination and partly due to her training, she has a strong stomach and is a rock in a crisis. She doesn't panic. When everything goes hideously wrong she will be one of the ones keeping their heads and staying calm. While this is most obvious on the job, it applies to any stressful or emotional situation. This can cause her to come across as rather cold and callous at times.
She used to be a friendly, chatty sort of person. Of course that was before she saw her husband gunned down in front of her. Unsurprisingly she's rather more reserved now, and doesn't have a great deal of patience for people. Only time will tell if she'll start to come back to how she used to be.
Reason for joining?: To stay out of jail, and for the chance of revenge.
