Disambiguation House came with a monster garden, but it's been sadly neglected for the last few seasons, and we're getting to work on it pretty late in the planting time. So, we're throwing a work party! June 12-14 - send me an RSVP email to LisaTheRiveter@gmail.com, and I'll send you the address.
There will be three tracks of programming for this gathering - weeding, composting, planting, and general repair in the garden, unpacking, sorting, and shelving books in the house, and organizing the great pile of stuff in the workshop. Among the highlights will be building our compost bins and setting up a new fire pit, as well as hacking back the forest from a few things that need to be accessible, like our propane tank.
Stormy and Rabbit will unfortunately not be able to join us, but that means we have a bit of additional space to sleep people indoors. However, I strongly recommend bringing tents - indoor sleeping space will go first to those with issues, with the healthy folks getting last call.
For this first work party, I'm strongly asking for RSVPs, as space is limited and the household isn't fully set up yet. If you just want to stop by to see the place and give us good wishes before the official housewarming, Sunday afternoon (the 14th) is the best time to do that.
Please bring, if you have them: Sunblock and hats and work gloves; garden hand tools; hammers and other hand tools; a chainsaw (for cutting seating for the fire pit); metal can or large rocks for the firepit; cuttings or seedlings; extra compost; something for potluck breakfast. We probably won't have an official kitchen crew, since we don't really have space to do it at the moment. I'll do a lot of cooking ahead of time, and assign people to be in charge of laying stuff out and washing up afterwards.
Finally a word about wild animals: We are out in the woods, and it's fairly sparsely populated. There are lots of wild animals on our property, ranging from little bunnies to stray cats to coyotes. In addition, the property has just been occupied after being vacant for several months. Please be careful around crawl spaces and abandoned buildings, as I really don't know what's living out there yet. We have a coyote defense gun in the house, and are happy to check visitors out on it and give them permission to use it if necessary. However, please do not use our guns without permission, and please don't bring your own without prior permission. Accidental shootings will not be tolerated.
House Rules So Far:
1. No smoking indoors. There are plenty of comfy places to smoke on the patios.
2. We have only one bathroom, so please be courteous to others in its use.
3. Let us know if you would like the key to the wireless network, or would like to use the wireless printer. You are welcome to do so, but may need help getting set up.
4. Children and pets are welcome, but are your responsibility. The place is not currently toddler-proofed.
5. Bringing lawn and other games, food and snacks, or gifts of plants and seeds is delightful.
6. We have some neighbors who live over the workshop. They seem cool, but try not to scare them too much until we get to know them a little. ;)
7. I'm very protective of my kitchen, and Stormy is equally protective of his computers. You are welcome to make use of each, but please ask us first and let us know what you would like to do. There will (eventually) be at least one public laptop available for use without asking.
8. We are on well water, which means that we must be frugal with it in the dry months. Please try not to run water needlessly, though showers and laundry are just fine.
9. Trash and recycling must be driven to the top of the hill. Please be frugal about waste, so that this chore is not so horrible. If you happen to be visiting on a Thursday, ask if we need help taking the trash out. We will be composting as much as possible.
10. Please do not wander upstairs without invitation. There is nothing up there that is for public access.
11. Please do not park on the lawn. If you're not sure where to park, come on in and ask someone.
12. THE CATS: Gizmo is the little black one. She is not allowed outside, and she bites. She is very friendly, but very aggressive - she will come sniff or lick you and may roll over on her back as if seeking belly rubs. Do NOT be fooled, lest you bleed; she does not like belly rubs, and only does that so she can attack. She does enjoy playing with toys, so feel free to grab a toy and play with her. Smeegle is the big fluffy orange one. He is only allowed out under Rabbit's supervision at the moment. He is a big softy, and you should give him as much love as you want. He has a huge foot fetish.
