The fastest way to handle this is to point you to the blog of
Ali Eteratz:
The editor of a leading Pakistani think-tank advocating equity, fairness and gender equality in Pakistan’s Islamic Laws [sharia] has been shot in the mouth.
Manzoor ul Hassan, perceived as a supporter of moderate politicians, has been in critical condition since the attempted murder in the Model Town, Lahore last Wednesday night.
Just another anecdote about the spread of sharia throughout the world which isn't going to make it into U.S. papers. Our presence in Afghanistan has not ended the Taliban's influence on the status of women there. Our presence in Iraq and Saudi Arabia has produced no progress for the status of women there. Our 1991 war in Kuwait could have been used to improve the status of women there -- but Dubya's daddy had no interest in that opportunity.
And so it goes, in Africa and Pacifica as well as the Middle East.
