I got this meme from
sgamadison The meme runs like this:
Comment to this post, and I will list seven things I want you to talk about. They might make sense or they might be totally random.
Then post that list, with your commentary, to your journal. Other people can get lists from you, and the meme merrily perpetuates itself.
Here are my questions from
sgamadison and
my answers.
1. What's the hardest thing about your job?
I have two jobs -- the one I really like, being a librarian...the hardest part is doing storytime. It isn't as bad for me as it used to be, but I really am far too self-conscious to really enjoy singing "I'm a Little Teapot" in front of excited kidlets and their really bored parents. The other job, being a church secretary (which I started as a temp job six years ago!) the hardest part is my boss who thinks I should be able to read his mind and sadly, as much as I wished for and tried when I was in middle school, I am not telepathic.
2. What's your favorite fandom or television show and why?
Oh this is hard. Favorite of all time? Current favorite? The one I had the hardest crush on during my time obsessed? Original Star Trek is my favorite of all time -- because it was the first one where I actually had a "fandom" -- ok it was two people, but still, fans to obsess with and goof off with was wonderful. My current favorite is Criminal Minds -- because I like the characters, especially as written in fanfic. The basics are in the show, but the fan writers have really explored the possibilities. The one I was most obsessed with while obsessed is Buffy. I love the writing of the show itself -- Joss really is God -- and the fans in that fandom are some of the best writers I have ever come across. Which I think is a reflection of the care that the writers of the show (until the last two seasons) took with every character and story and theme. (Of course, those are just a few of my tv fandoms. Book fandoms are completely different and for another time.)
3. What is your 'desert island' book and why?
That is a very hard thing. I have so many books I love that one alone for the rest of my life would be hard to choose. I think it would probably be -- the Complete Sherlock Holmes. It has a bunch of different stories with a bunch of different things to think about -- historically and writing wise and I just like them a lot. Hmm, either that or Witch of the Glens by Sally Watson -- my favorite historical romance for tweens. It's got witchcraft, romance, prejudice against tinkers, the Jacobite Rebellion...what's not to love to read and re-read.
4. Why 'lisas_secret'?
This journal was created for my slash reading. The friends' page is called Shhh, I am reading....porn. I didn't really think I would end up posting anything here and since I am not really the comment type, I figured it would be basically just me ever seeing it. There are only 2 people in my real life who know about this journal.
wanted_a_pony is one and our high school friend the Methodist minister is the other. Wanted_a_pony definitely needed to be privy to this since she is the one who first explained "slash" to me when the only slash there was was K/S. The minister is just not your run of the mill minister and she's fascinated by the worlds of fandom and has been a friend far longer than she has been a minister. I did end up posting occasionally --writing actual fiction was a shock and surprise -- and I have commented sometimes too, so there are now people who know me only through this journal, which I never expected at all.
5. Do you have an OTP?
I have OTPs for every fandom. K/S of course. Sherlock/John of course. Xander/Spike in Buffy. Rodney/John of course. Gibbs/Dinozzo in NCIS (And weirdly, I also like Ziva/Tim). Rossi/Reid in Criminal Minds. Spencer/Lassiter in Psych. And even though I haven't read any and have watched hardly any episodes, I think I would be a Neal/Peter/Elizabeth fan for White Collar. I find I like pairings (or moresomes) are complementary and caring about each other.
6. What kinds of fanfic to you prefer to read?
I like long, emotionally complicated stories. Which is why I really enjoy your Second Series stories. They deal with more than just plot and everyone has development in some way, either personal understanding or understanding of others. I also like humor, especially snark. Which looking at my OTPs, is pretty clear. My favorite NCIS story is
Damage by Xanthe -- deals with past child abuse and Xanthe makes the movement through the stages seem very believable, so while it's draining, it's also a satisfying story that brings things to a place of acceptance and balance. My favorite Criminal Minds story is
Landlocked Blues by Coffeecocktails -- it follows Rossi as he comes back to the BAU and as he slowly comes to understand and care for Reid, who is more complicated than most believe. And the writing is phenomenal: "Reid is a stage magician and his trick is this: he feigns so much frank fucking honesty - pretends to be so much more open with the world than anyone else - that people trust him and believe him right away and they don’t stop to think what he might be hiding under all that guileless charm. He doesn’t use this in a malicious way, Dave thinks; it’s just that Reid is the most artful concealer of his own emotions that Dave has ever met, all the while pretending to be utterly uncomplicated. His words are a conjurer’s flourish; he distracts the audience by acting utterly disarming and while they are looking at that, his real feelings are happening so far below the surface that no one ever sees them. It scares Dave, sometimes, to look into Reid’s angular, pale face and see only himself reflected back in it, as though his own over-confidence and arrogance are being projected onto a blank screen. He is afraid, sometimes, that he is rubbing the other man out."
7. What's the one thing that is guaranteed to make you smile when you see or experience it?
Ok, it's kittens being cute. I know. I am a sophisticated writer and all that but, little kitties are sooooo cute! On bad days I spend far too much time on lolcats.
