The rumors she heard whispered through the halls were bad and only getting worse.  After being with Marlow last night and trying to comfort the broken girl all Lisa could see was red.  She did not like other people hurting her friends, unintentionally or not.  Avery.  Marlow.  The names just kept repeating themselves in her head.

I've been better, to be honest. I just talked to Tracey and well, things aren't good. But I think you get what I mean. I don't know how good of company I'd be right now, but maybe I'll take you up on that offer.

Lisa did as she was told. While she waited for him, she moved to a comfy and more private corner of the common room, momentarily fiddling with her laptop until she saw him come through the door.

Avery spotted her immediately and avoiding the stares of everyone else, he hurried over to her. With a rueful smile he sat down beside her and let out a breath.

"Does it get easier?" he asked her, barely looking at her.

She sighed and shook her head. "No. No it never does."

She leaned her head on his shoulder and stayed quiet for a moment, giving him a chance to breath. Finally she quietly asked, "Are you okay? I'm sure everyone's been asking you that...and you've probably gotten more attention than you've ever wanted in your life..."

She was certainly right about that. It was obvious to every and anyone that he wasn't exactly the greatest with people and social situations. He wasn't sure he'd ever get used to the attention.

"I'm okay," he said, after a moment. "At least, I will be. Merlin, if this isn't pathetic, I'm not sure what is."

"Oh it's not pathetic," she said firmly. "It's pathetic that the whole school has to make it their business." The filthy buggers.

"What happened when you talked with Tracey?" She was hesitant to ask but went for it anyway.

He trusted Lisa. They had been friends for a long time and she had never steered him wrong before. He turned in his spot toward her, bringing one knee up to rest on the couch.

"Not much," he said honestly. "I mean, it happened exactly the way I thought it would. She and Bletchley slept together, she loves him, she wants to be single. Me, out."

She sighed again and her forhead wrinkled slightly as a small frown formed on her lips. She had to practically bite her tongue to stop herself from saying that Tracey had never been good enough for him anyway.

She ran a hand through her hair over and over again absently. "I'm sorry it didn't work out Avery, I really am. The whole story is just...it's bollocks."

"Deep down inside I think I knew it was going to happen," he said honestly, never having voiced that opinion to anyone else before.

"He kissed her once when we first started dating. She called him her best friend. After all their history, I was an idiot to think I could be any better."

This was news to her but not of the surprising type. When he called himself an idiot she nearly wanted to push him off the couch though.

"You aren't an idiot," she said, her tone slightly rough. "You took a chance. You followed your heart and sometimes it just doesn't work out."

She put her hand comfortingly over his and smiled at him. "But if you ever call yourself an idiot because you fell for a beautiful and charming girl I'm going to hit you over the head, hard."

He didn't expect her hand over his but somehow it was oddly comforting. Most of the time he just felt like his brain was going to implode. Now, he was soothed.

"Alright, no more calling myself an idiot," he said, laughing just slightly. Then he caught her words and smiled sadly. "Yeah, she beautiful and charming alright. Damn."

It was good to hear him laugh. She chewed on a fingernail as she added, "Good. You can't be an idiot when you pride yourself on how smart you are...that's an oxymoron Avery."

She flicked her hair over her shoulder and shrugged. "I guess she was. Compared to me though, she was nothing. No one can beat me in charm and beauty." She laughed quietly at herself and winked at Avery. "Consider yourself lucky. You get to be associated with the hottest girl at hogwarts."

Indeed he was. Damn, lucky him.

He let out a low whistle under his breath, though he was in good spirits. "Someone didn't teach you any modesty did they?" he laughed again. "Though, you know, its okay. It wouldn't be if you weren't actually pretty and charming."

She grinned and shrugged helplessly. "I was only gifted with beauty and charm, not modesty. As they say everyone has their flaws."
