On Thursday I finally went to my first
Meetup group get-together. I had been interested in this concept and means of meeting people and doing new things for a few years now. When I found out my good friend Heather actually started her own Meetup group, I was inspired to look into this idea again. So I signed up for a few but never had the time or the energy to attend a meeting when I was living in Long Beach with my crazy schedule. So when we moved up here I promised myself that I would look into this again and actually attend a meeting.
So Thursday I went to the Bay Area Spanish Language Meetup. This specific meeting was actually for newbies, the event being titled "I'm scared to go to a Spanish Meetup Meetup" and it was perfect! There were about 15 people there all ranging from way beginner to intermediate and it was such a comfortable setting and a great group of people. There was an instructor there who helped lead the conversation and point out some grammatical and vocabulary help. I met a really nice woman named Denise and we're going to go to the next Meetup together, a monthly get together at a
coffeshop in my sister's neighborhood so it should be a nice, relaxed atmosphere for my first real meetup with the group. It was really cool because Denise commented on how great my accent was (all thanks to my Mexicana mama!) and the best thing was that the instructor came up to me afterward and told me that speaking Spanish is fairly easy for me which was a great reinforcement!
Tonight I started downloading a
podcast that tells the world news in slow Spanish, so it'll help get me used to hearing it more and more. It's so nice to finally have gone to a meeting after being nervous about it for so long and feeling more confident about my ability to understand and speak Spanish and my ability to improve.
I've signed up for a few other Meetup groups and am looking forward to going to some of their meetings in the near future! "Booze 'N Books" (a reading club that meets over cocktails), "Latin food potluck party", and the "Bay Area Swing Dancers" meetup...fun!
