O hai, yes I'm still alive!
Despite living less than 5 miles from at least 4 different cinemas, we don't go to the movies all that often. We went to see Monsters vs. Aliens yesterday, but I think the last one we saw before that was Bolt.
I was a little shocked and chuckled a bit over the "Silence Cell Phones / No Texting" sign as we entered the theater. The No Texting bit was new to me. And it was repeated during the previews, Silence Cell Phones, and No Texting, Please." Has texting during movies become that big of a problem?
Since it was an animated movie, the pre-show presentation was kid-oriented, and yet the first movie they previewed was definitely not aimed at kids! I mean, it wasn't horror or wartime action, but a Romantic Comedy type that .... I don't see anyone under about 14 being interested in? Weird. The rest of the things they covered were kid-friendly, but that first one felt out of place.
There were also advertisements for some "one night only" type events, including a "Dr. Laura Schlessinger celebrates Moms" thing, which today I read is actually going to be filming here in Irvine. Not that I'm interested, I just found it amusing that it was going to be local. But there were a couple things like that... I guess with digital distribution, the movie theater industry is definitely changing and growing to keep up with the times.
I had my choice on how I wanted to see my movie, actually. I picked to see it in 2D because the 3D glasses and effect get on my nerves after a bit. I suspect it's my astigmatism or something, but I just prefer the flat version. I could have seen it down the road at The District in 3D, or a few more miles away at either The Spectrum or The Block at Orange in IMAX 3D. We saw Nightmare Before Christmas in 3D, and Bolt in 3D, and I just don't think it adds that much to the experience; at least not enough for me to overcome the niggling discomfort of watching a movie in that format. It's okay for a few minutes on the Toy Story ride in California Adventure, but even the 15 minutes or so of MuppetVision 3D is pushing it; 90 minutes for an animated film is just way too much, so I'm glad I get that choice.
There were, unsurprisingly, a good number of kids in the theater, and I ended up with one behind me who liked to put his feet on the back of my seat and shove, but I ignored it the best I could. There had been one before the movie started who kept running up and down our aisle to get to the seats down in the aisle below us. Actually it turned out it was two kids, but wow about the third time past I really wanted to stick my foot out and trip him! I am turning into a grumpy old woman!!!
I still enjoyed the movie... it had a lot of laughs and in-jokes. The story wasn't bad, but it was no Pixar film. I had seen folks asking if it lived up to Kung Fu Panda, but I never went to see that one, so I can't say. Hugh Laurie and Stephen Colbert both made me laugh. I had thought that the alien bad guy might also be voiced by Colbert, but he was not. It just felt like it could have been him, too.
Okay, I think I'm done rambling for now. Hopefully I won't take so long between posts the next time!
