A few days ago I've read
an article written by someone I used to admire a lot - a great Romanian writer and thinker, a most refined intellectual and all around awesome guy, Andrei Plesu. The article was about the famous gay baby poster that, apparently, appeared in Romania too.
It was painful to see him try to disguise his latent homophobia as art critique. He expressed his disappointment at the utter bad taste of the poster and condemned the whole idea, especially considering that it's still debatable whether homosexuality is inborn or an acquired taste disease. He even mentioned the few gay men he actually knew, like racists invoke their supposed black friends. He concluded that LGBT people should shut up because if we pay too much attention, what will be next? Lazy people asking to be recognized and supported? This is the essence of what I read in his article, but everything looked nice and polished and smart.
It's not surprising when all kinds of dumb people express their hatred towards groups of their choice - it's to be expected, because of their intellectual limitation. But it's so disappointing when intelligent people are this ignorant too. The origin of homosexuality was indeed debatable, but that was at least 50 years ago. Now it's pretty clear it's not a choice... And all the big words he says - it's all bullshit. The man is like all the hoards of idiots who think that 'tolerance' (what a debatable notion...) means accepting LGBT people are allowed to exist as long as they don't EVER make their presence known.
Homophobia afflicts every category. Intolerance (while I dislike the word 'tolerance', I think 'intolerance' is still a good word) pops up where you least expect it.
And some people, when their time to say something is irremediably gone, should shut up and leave us with the memory of their better days. Because, look what happens: an article like this and Poof! all respect is gone. Like he never wrote other things before.
