fraser island

I am so SICK of sitting in front of computers attempting to be productive. I am so looking forward to a week from now when I'll have two finals and two huge papers DONE and only two finals to go, but over a week to study for them.

I went to Fraser Island, the largest sand island in the world, this past weekend. It's an amazing place. So the whole thing is made completely of sand, but there are eucalypt forest, beaches, rainforest, streams, and tons of lakes on it. there are no sealed roads on the island. all travel is via 4WD vehicles over sand. We spent most of the time bouncing along in the back of a 4WD jeep over beaches and through forests. It was awesome cruising along the roadless beach, but my back was sore afterward from so much bouncing! We went on several walks through the forests and swimming in a couple of cold but refreshing lakes. Lake Makenzie, one of the major attractions of the island, is this crystal clear lake surrounded by the whitest and softest sand EVER! it was formed b/c the land surface in this particular place is below the watertable and the water passing through the sand leached out all the nutrients. To get to the other lake we swam in, Lake Wabby, we started off walking through eucalypt forest and then suddenly came out into what seemed like the Sahara - absolutely no vegetation - just huge sand dunes. and trekking across it with the sun unrelentlessly beating down, it felt like what i imagine the sahara feels like. I don't remember there was no vegetation there. i wish i did.
we saw a couple dingoes and dolphins, too. the dingoes really are just dogs only not domesticated. in fact, if one did become used to people and begged for food, it'd be shot.
ate grilled cheese and s'mores for supper and i realized that s'mores are really quite an american institution. I haven't seen any graham cracker during my time here, and there's no Hershey's chocolate outside the U.S. really. it's all cadbury here!

well - i guess i better to my various papers.
