This is rather belated, but I went to the australia zoo when my dear pal abby and her characters of room mates came to visit and we saw Steve Irwin live with crikey!
salt water crocodiles. that was pretty exciting although i also have
new found respect for him b/c that is absolutely the nicest zoo i've
ever been to. they are actually really focused on conservation and
treat their animals really well and they're incredibly healthy. the
elephants have like 200 hectares to roam around on and they take their
wombats on walks in wheelie carts, which is out of control adorable.
i think wombats are my second favorite terrestrial animal (after house
cats).
Just got back from heron island, which is this tiny island (you can walk
around it in like 40 minutes) in the Great Barrier reef with my marine
studies class. we went snorkeling every day and to be honest, I
thought the Caribbean was better b/c there were more sponges - I value color
in coral reef, but I saw tons of reef sharks, sting rays, eagle rays,
sea turtles!, and christmas tree worms. but -
I did see eagle ray jump, like absolutely leap out of the water and
belly flop back in. who knew eagle rays jumped? we also went night
snorkeling, which was pretty cool b/c we got to strap glow sticks onto
our snorkels. we saw a huge sleeping loggerhead turtle and a huge
starfish with 20 arms. we also got to release baby turtles b/c they
wandered up to the station b/c of the lights. unfortunatley, we heard
sea gulls and saw some sharks right after we released them. I also got to fondle my favorite marine animal alot - a sea hair or sea hare (i'm not sure how it's spelled), but it's this snail, mollusc type thing and it is just so squishy and fun to pet. we spent some quality time together. the food
was really good, too, although it was made by a kitchen nazi who
yelled at everyone. she yelled at me to "get back in line! do you
think you're special?" when i moved up to look at the dessert and she
yelled at this swedish girl to "learn some English" b/c she didn't
know the word keish. that's not an english word, anyway and i have no
idea how to spell it.
spent 7.5 hours in the library yesterday finishing a lab report and still got it in 45 minutes late. what a rip-off! i guess that's about it. except it's perfect picnic weather, but no picnics! i thought aussies were all about the barbies!
