so . . . let's see. classes are classes - nothing new there.
but I went on a field trip this past weekend to north stradbroke island in moreton bay with my class,
australia's marine environment. we trudged about on mud flats and
looked for creatures. it's amazing how high and low the tide can be!
but we found anemones (i petted them - they're sticky!), worms, clams
(big ones!), box fish, sting rays, snails (one huge one - bigger than
my foot!), crabs, which i and this other girl tried to catch in a
bucket, which resulted in a lot of girly screaming and laughing. but
it tried to pinch me - of course i don't blame it. i'd pinch somebody
if they were trying to shove me in a bucket. but then this smaller
crab came along and the bigger one we were chasing climbed on top of
it and held it and then ran around with it while we were still chasing
it! we were supposed to come up with some research project, but we
had a day to come up with it and then carry it out, so it was kind of
a joke. i just ended up wandering around and seeing what i could see
(in seagrass compared to just sand), but it was fun. we also took
walks along the *high energy beach* where the waves were crashing onto
rocky cliffs and we spotted dolphins and turtles and the water was an
absolutely amazing color of turquoise. on the last afternoon we
finally got to jump in the waves, which were the largest and fastest
ones i've ever been in. the end was severely marred, however, b/c on
the ferry home, the doors wouldn't open. we were at the dock and
couldn't get off for over an hour. so then i missed dinner and the
grocery store was closed (closed at 6pm - ridiculous), and i didn't
want to eat fast food, so i ended up eating a candy bar from a vending
machine for dinner. quite sad.
other than that - i went to this moonfest - a celebration of the full
moon at this beach in a bay with lots of fire twirlers and african
drum jamming and a lovely ocean breeze. and tonight i'm goin dumpster diving - incredibly weird
and seemingly disgusting i know - not my idea. the environment club
organized it and it just sounded too intriguing to not go, so i'm
going to check it out, but i remain skeptical. went kayaking last weekend and got really, really sore and the weekend before that i pretty much just drank and had hangovers.
oh - and i'm going to new zealand for easter break. four other
dickinsonians and i are going to the south island and touring around
the island on a bus for 10 days. i'm really excite about it. it's actually just as cheap as flying or touring around
any part of australia and not much farther away! plus this way i'll
be with fun people instead of by myself.
well - time for dumpstering!
