Went to Pittsburgh this week-end. It was nice to be back in the Ohio Valley. Went on a historic tour of the steel industry with the most adorable old man imaginable. He told us good stories about how he once walked in on his grandma washing her hair (fully clothed) and his grandma couldn't look him in the eye for a week and how his mom would store food in the parlor to keep cool and they had this little black dog that would sit in the doorway and just stare at it and he, the little imp, would push it to try to get it to eat the food, but the dog refused. We also went on a tour of different incredibly polluting industries and their detrimental effects on the surrounding environment and community (the discrepencies between economic prosperity and environmental health - *sigh*) For example (although I'm sure none of you really care) there was this coal plant that poured all of its fly ash into this 640 acre lake (like that's even legal?) that has turned flourescent blue from all the chemical and all that's stopping it from pouring into the Ohio River (upstream from Madison) is this earthen dam. There was also this humongous hazardous waste incinerator that was built in the valley, so its stack is even with all the houses and buildings on top of the hill including an elementary school.
I also had some excellent Indian food (nothin' like some good nan) as well as some excellent Mexican food (nothin' like some good Margharitas). I tried to get into a bar with someone else's ID, but they totally interrogated me and asked me to tell them everything about the ID including address/zip code, etc., so I just left - rejected.
And of course it's always an adventure travelling with Heiman - our crazy wack monkey of a professor who frequently drives drunk, turns on red when there are big signs explicitly saying not to, get lost going places he's been at least 15 times before and says things like, "Hurry! We have to get to the windmills before they close!" WTF, mate? Windmills don't close?
But - at any rate - I didn't get any work done and I have three paper due this week which I haven't really started in any way - so I better go to bed now.
