So, I'm curious. Anyone on my flist read Divergent? My sister convinced me to read it and I got totally hooked. It's not the most perfectly written book ever, but man, the concept and the world building are wonderful. I'm actually really looking forward both to the last book in the series and to the movie coming out next year ( Read more... )

It's a YA book, sort of along the same lines as Hunger Games without the mass slaughter of children. It takes place in a somewhat dystopian future, where everyone is divided into one of five factions -

Dauntless - those who value courage and bravery over all.
Candor - those who value honesty over all.
Erudite - those who value intelligence over all.
Amity - those who value peacefulness and kindness over all.
Abnegation - those who value selflessness over all.

When a child turns 16 years old, they take a series of tests to determine which faction they best match, and then they have to choose whether to remain in the faction where they were born, or switch to the faction they best match. The storyline follows Beatrice Prior, who is born Abnegation, but whose test results give her the option to choose another faction. She can stay with her family and the life she's always known, or she can be the person she really is. She can't have both.

During the days that follow, Tris has to figure out which of her new acquaintances is actually a friend, and which ones aren't, all while struggling to understand her feelings for the sometimes fascinating, sometimes infuriating boy who is helping to train her.

But none of that may matter in the end, because Tris is hiding a secret that could get her killed if anyone finds out.

It's a really good book series. I actually liked it a lot more than Hunger Games because, honestly, Katniss is not really a very likable protagonist most of the time. Tris actually is. Also, so far, through the first two books in the trilogy, there has been no romance triangle, THANK GOD. Tris is slowly but surely falling in love with Four, but the romance is really just a sideline of the whole story, which makes me happy. The last book in the trilogy is due out in the fall, and they're in the process of casting for the movie of the first book. It's supposed to be released next year.

O . O

Strangely I've seen people say the exact opposite regarding Tris. Interesting. *rubs chin*

I didn't like Katniss much at first either but by the end of the series I loved her. Finnick is still my favorite though.
