Sin City

FINALLY got to see "Sin City" tonight. I don't really know what I was expecting, but I LIKED it. I wrinkled my nose when I saw in the opening credits that Quentin Tarentino (or however the fuck you spell his last name) was a guest director. Then I had raunchy visions of the over-done mutilations in "Kill Bill, Vol. 1". I just don't much go for the whole your-arm-is-cut-off-and-blood-gushes-for-a-good-mile type shit. Seriously, somebody'd get a limb hacked off, and blood would just fountain out in an over-done, bloody Old Faithful. It was rediculous. Haven't seen Vol. 2 yet. Hell, ain't even gotten to finish Vol. 1

Anywho, back to "Sin City".

First of all, if you haven't seen it yet, don't get it if you're expecting a pulse-pounding typical comic-made-to-movie type of film. It's got the thrills, but the movie isn't a non-stop steroid rush.

It's deeper, darker, and (I don't know how else to put this) but more thoughtful. And Oh. My. Fucking. GOD, the cinematography is AMAZING!

Many already know from previews that the movie is mostly black-and-white with certain things being colored. And you really can't predict where color is going to show up. The blood isn't always red, for instance. Sometimes you'll see it as though you're looking at the negative of a picture. It's got the opposite of color, but there's still no mistaking what it is.

People's eyes (like Alexis Bledel's for instance) when they're given color, they're given a stark, radiant, unmistakable color. Alexis Bledel's eyes were a brilliant, beguiling color of sapphire blue that put even Elijah Wood's deep baby blues to shame.

Speakin' of ol' ElWood, he plays a bad guy in this. A creepy one too. Dude is seriously psychotic. Doesn't register any pain nor makes a single noise (even his eyes stay the same, as if they're watching TV or something) when he's basically dismembered and eaten alive by his own pet wolf who is just as freakin' psychotic, but now I'm giving too much away.

Anywho.

As I said, the movie is not a non-stop action thrill ride. It's got its thrills (one of them being watching Jessica Alba do her thang on stage....My GOD that woman is HOTT), but its narration is done by whoever the story is focusing on at the time, and it's done in a way that basically tells you what that character is thinking at that very moment---hence why I said that the movie was more thoughtful.

Wes actually fell asleep from boredom, but I think that that was also 'cause he was tired.

You do have to pay attention and have patience. It tells four separate stories, beginning with Bruce Willis' character, but they all manage to converge later on so that you can understand the depth behind it all. Just have patience. But, I do have to say that the only person you don't really find out anything about is Josh Hartnett's character. You only see him in the very beginning scene, and the very last one. You'll just have to see.

I was not even remotely disappointed by this movie and I seriously wouldn't mind owning it. I'd say it's one of the best comic book movies ever made. It's fascinating and, as I said, the screen work, the visual effects, are utterly beguiling.

And I must say that, this time, Quentin Tarrantino's flair did this movie just right, even as just a guest director.

So, anywho. It's nearly 2am and I'm sleepy (as evidenced by my recent attack of the Late Night Sillies that I had not too long ago).
