What gets me here (in a good way) is the mix of compassion and brutality. This is beautifully written. I love the glimpse of Jyuushirou's zanpakutou spirits, and I really like your take on what kind of mental place Shunsui was in when he was first at the Academy.
I'm so glad all of that worked for you. Thank you, so much, for this comment.
And, when I really thought about him, Shunsui fascinated me. I'd known he was thrown out of his family into the Academy to have someone deal with him, and that from his later spending habits, he was used to money. Compared to Ukitake who's poor but well loved and really driven to better himself, I really wanted to figure out how they got to be such great friends.
They're both the same at heart, but all those different appearances when they're so young... seemed like they'd really get in the way unless they got pared down to the essentials.
That was... bizarre. At least, the part when they were being prepared for their punishment. I never really thought of guards as so friendly and helpful before. But well, I suppose that I never really thought much about it all.
Still, this was a fascinating deviation from the normal Shunsui and Jyuushiro story and rather refreshing. Not everything is puppies and kittens all the time. Further, I do understand why Jyuu felt that he needed to be punished, too. And I think he's a better person for accepting it.
Yes... definitely not puppies and kittens for these youngsters. I think they grow a better appreciation for puppies and kittens and koy and flowers after they weather a bit.
Guards are people, too! *grin*
And I think you're last comment really made it for me. I'm glad that came through.
*points at fic* There. That's it. That's why I love these two. Also, love, love, love the interaction between Jyuushirou and Sogyo no Kotowari. I kinda have a weakness for zanpakutou stories or bits in stories, so that made me happy. And again, you made me really like Yamamoto, who I normally don't care as much for. Very well done.
Well, the whole arc is about how the two find the names to their zanpakutou... so... there will be plenty of those references when the boys are under... stress so to speak. But I might be biased... since all I've done is watch Ichigo release his shikai. I'm trying to read more stuff about the other ways folks think of shikai. *grin*
*blinks* The...the whole arc? YAY! I get fantastic characterization AND zanpakutou interaction! Best news I've heard all day. Shikai isn't something I've poked at much, probably because my most talkative muse is Zangetsu (Betcha didn't see that one coming) and his shikai is pretty well documented in canon. I'm looking forward to your interpretation.
Yeah... the whole driving idea behind all these stories was my curiosity about why and how these two guys are the ONLY guys in all of Soul Society to have twin blades for their released zanpakutou, as well as... hmmm... twin gods for their swords in a way. Why do they both have two? I've fenced for years and years and played kendo just once, but the completely different philosophy to a fight one needs to use two blades in two hands rather than one blade in two hands just made me think way too much. *grin*
:) Nice add in with the reiatsu angle! Jyuushiro fainting and slipping into his 'inner world' was interesting as well and I enjoyed reading this tremendously. You're application of pain to leave an impression was well done and it was, thankfully, not overly graphic or anything. >.>; I've read some pretty graphic torture scenes, but this I liked. It was there for a reason and it was understandable.
I'm very happy that it made sense to you and that you enjoyed it. I was mildly worried that it was too intense, but so glad it didn't come across as random. :-)
It's a lot easier to share when folks really like it.
wow that was very intense....i loved it. I love the sharing of spirt power and comforting each other I loved what I am guessing are Ukitake's twin blades as tuna....amazing! thanks so much for sharing I can not wait for more.
