It's Cold Outside

Jan 15, 2008 22:29

It's now likely to be single digits tonight (-12 to -17 C), teens (-12 to -6 C) tomorrow, and dead flat zero (-18 C) tomorrow night.

*shiver*

I'm glad we have heat and know that our insulation is good.

Makes the typical OUR Center farewell all the more poignant. "Stay warm."

You're seeing some rather drastic variation there, aren't you?

We usually do. 50's to 10's, 0's to 40's and then back again, though going up is usually in just increments of 20 degrees or so, rather than the 40 going down.

The average daily temperature swing is usually about 30° between the high and the low for a single day (~18° C). That's unusual for most other parts of the world.

A lot of it is because of the thin atmosphere. On clear nights, any heat in the area gets sucked away very quickly. Makes for very nice summers, when the days are very hot but the nights are nice and cool, cool enough to cool the house completely. Another factor here is the sun, as more of it reaches the ground during the day, as there's less atmosphere to block it. So we get higher days.

When the jet stream shifts, everything gets magnified.

This is why we watch the weather pretty closely. *grin* I remember having a guest from San Diego just look at John and I as if we were mad as the ONLY TV we watch, absolutely, every night, is the weather.

And I thought it was cold yesterday when the high temperature was only 50 :-)

I spent the weekend raking leaves in the back yard, but couldn't finish because of allergies (it's "Cedar Fever" season here, as it is every January, and this January has been particularly bad), so I get to spend next weekend raking leaves again, hopfully finishing what's left of the back yard and getting started on the front.

In terms of global warming, two years ago, and before, leaf-raking season was always the last week of December (around Christmas). Now it's into January... weeks later. It's been moving later every year I've lived here, but never so dramatically as these last two years.

Wow...

*laughter*

While doing his trick or treating for Halloween, Jet went up to the door of one house and when the guy answered it, Jet piped up, "You really should rake your leaves."

The seasons haven't changed that much here, but we're pretty far from the oceans, so it kind of makes sense. If anything, we're just getting more water, which we do need.
