Mentorship and adoption (Harry-centric)
Having worked so much on my pairing-lists the last week, I need a break from them. ;)
So I'm making a list for Harry being mentored or adopted.
- For this list I accept only stories that follow canon at least for one book. (AU-stories belong either in AU: Harry doesn't grow up with the Dursleys or AU: Harry grows up with the Dursleys but story diverges from canon once at Hogwarts.)
- No Redo-stories. See my Timetravel-list for those.
- For Dumbledore as (only) mentor, see my Grandfatherly and mentor!Dumbledore-list.
- No Severitus-stories, "Sirius is Harry's father" or similar. (Unless the blood-relationship is secondary and someone else is the primary mentor! Or someone becomes Harry's mentor before the blood-relationship is known.) - for Severitus-stories see enahma's list Complete Severitus stories.
- And no stories where the mentor-relationship developes into a romantical one, please.
- No abandoned stories or WIPs with less than five chapters, please. And no badly written stories.
- There are a couple of stories where Harry gets adopted but the adoption is very far from being the focus of the story, so I probably won't add any of those.

Post-GoF. Mostly gen. Harry's powers suddenly awaken.

While the primary mentor is Dumbledore, Snape also becomes a mentor to Harry lateron.
Beyond the Heart by Lyssaphra. NR
Summer after GoF is hell for Harry. As Snape comes to fetch him from there at the request of Dumbledore, he is enraged by the situation. He will not allow this anymore. Harry will NOT spend another summer there.
Complete. PG-13.
The Birthday Present by excessively perky. NR
Snape cannot forgive himself for what he did to join the Inner Circle. He survives, but is given a different penance instead. Remus Lupin hears more than he wants to, and knows he has much to do as well.
Snape takes on twelve apprentices, and considers Harry an unofficial one. (Snape-centric)

What if there was a darker truth hidden in Harry's story? Summer before third year, Harry begins to question his memory blanks. What happens when he finds himself before Snape for help? [includes mentor Severus, MPD, child abuse, protective Remus]

Dumbledore's Army by BobMin. ##
Harry/Ginny, Ron/Hermione, Neville/Luna, Remus/Tonks, Snape/OFC. Sixth year. After Harry has two visions of Voldemort attacking Hogsmeade and Hogwarts, he does everything he can to assure that those visions won't ever happen like this. In particular he trains the DA.
Sequel Harry Potter and the Spiritus Crystalus. Seventh year.

While the focus of the story isn't on Snape mentoring Harry, he and his wife Serena help him a lot.
Family Night by Celebony. #
As Hogwarts starts a quarterly Family Night, Harry is determined take part. Facing the heartache of looking in all the wrong places, he'll have to discover the true meaning of family, and that sometimes it comes from where you least expect it.
Warning: this fic had me nearly in tears!

Snape retrieves an injured Harry from the Dursleys-- only this time, the damage is more permanent, and Snape is not prepared to be cuddly.

First part of the complete HDH trilogy. Post GoF. A tale about a captivity which brings two unlikely persons closer - much closer.

Harry Potter and the Battle of Wills by Jocelyn.
Post-OotP. Snape blows his cover as a spy to save Harry from Voldemort. To win the war, even those who loathe each other must unite, and many lessons are learned in the process.

Harry Potter and the Enemy within by Theowyn. #
Harry needs to take up Occlumency-training again during his sixth year. Slowly his relationship with Snape changes.
Complete. PG-13.
Harry Potter and the Guardians of Power by teacherbev. #
Starts mid-year during OotP. (Rest of OotP and HBP doesn't happen.) Harry gets kidnapped by Voldemort and thinking "Merlin, save me" with all his power and magic behind it, manages to transport himself and Severus back in time to Merlin and the Founders. Severus as mentor to Harry.
Complete. PG-13.
The first couple of chapters aren't too well written and the author went a bit overboard with Harry being the Heir of all four Founders, Merlin, a multiple elemental, a metamorphmagus,... Also Snape is a bit OOC once or twice. But nonetheless the fic is quite outstanding: it has the most original way to deal with captured Deatheaters and the greatest prank ever played on Dumbledore!

It's Harry's fifth year and things aren't going well at the Dursley's or Hogwarts. New powers, a prophecy and Snape!

Harry Potter and the Long Summer by Mirriam Q Webster. #
During the summer after OotP the Order rescues Harry from Privet Drive. Dumbledore has no better place to put him than Snape Manor. Snape becomes a mentor to Harry. (Clichéd fic but well written for once.)

Harry Potter and the Runespoor Shield by Ms Spider. #
Minor Harry/Ginny. Harry finds an old trunk his mother has left for him. How did she find the things in it, why did she think he'd need them? And how come Ginny's kitten looks just like the kitten Hagrid brought for his first birthday? And can Harry and Snape deal with their mutual animosity long enough to figure everything out? Complete. PG-13.
While it is not exactly Snape mentoring Harry, they have to work together and are the two primary characters for the fic, so it's often recced as Mentor!Snape.
Harry Potter and the Unsuspecting Saviour by Earwen Uruviel Tinuviel. NR
Harry's uncle beats him while he is sick and depressed. Snape comes to the rescue and is forced to take care of harry during the summer. Rather OOC-Snape.

Your typical Snape rescues Harry and eventually adopts him fic. Harry is 12 when the fic starts. It will follow along for the most part with up to book 4, and will incorporate aspects from books 5 and 6.

Jamie Snape and the Chamber of Secrets by Original Dark Angel. NR
AU CoS. Dobby never stopped the mail and as a result, Severus Snape has to rescue our hero from Privet Drive. The only way to keep him safe requires an Unusual Adoption. Abuse via Dursleys.

Life after life by Amber-and-Ash. NR
Harry is shown a way to defeat Voldemort, but is it worth the price? Snape mentors Harry fic, no HBP. Vampire-fic.

Malfoy Child by Vorabiza. ##
Harry/Draco. Seventh year (not HBP-compliant). Draco gets turned into a 4-year old by a potion and Harry takes care of him. As Snape is Draco's godfather, Harry and Snape are in close contact for several months and slowly Snape becomes a mentor to Harry.

Harry/Draco, Severus/Lucius. Draco is a Veela and Harry is his mate. Harry is disenchanted with Dumbledore and his friends (who are completely under Dumbledore's thumb) and jumps upon the occasion to get away from them.

Snape saves Harry from the Dursleys, Harry saves Snape from Voldemort and, by the end of it all, they just might save each other. This is a story about redemption, love, acceptance and strength. It’s about Harry and Snape finding their own way on their own, but never alone. It’s about each of them letting go of the past so that one can embrace a hopeful future-even when past hurts come back to haunt them. Mostly, it’s about Harry and Snape teaching each other. After all, one good turn does deserve another.

Harry/Hermione. Pre-HBP. It's been two weeks since the DoM and the world is beginning to change. With the war begun Harry must work to discover his role with the help of those he loves. Sirius appoints N.Tonks to be Harry's official, on-paper guardian, on the condition that she consider Remus to be his primary guardian. Harry has a very strong mentor relationship with Remus, and a very good relationship with Tonks as well, since she takes her role as his guardian very seriously.

The Dursleys are borderline abusive, but rescuing Harry may mean that Sirius must forfeit the chance to prove his innocence and put the war effort in jeopardy. Remus and Sirius need to help Harry through this new rise of darkness even as they come to terms with the last one.
