Just got back from seeing
Windy and Carl at this little hole in the wall place called Danny's Tavern. Nothing special about the place, but
Kranky spins there monthly every third Monday, and they have $3 PBR, so I may hit it up next month. Aside from that, not my usual scene - if I even have a scene. Lots of hipsters, who all sat around being themselves (ie. irritating)
The music was good though. I can't say I'm a huge fan of Windy and Carl, but I've liked what I've heard. Very sleepy and persistent without being obtrusive. I'd wager they had more in common with trance metal than ambient stuff, roughly a one hour long continuous performance, and I honestly think they could drop the synth they bring a long with them, because the two of them on guitar was a lot more pleasant. I think I saw a few technical issues with their kit that could be ironed out, but there was a bit where Windy broke out this (I think) guitar pickup and started fiddling with it on the guitar strings and produced some really choice buzzy tones. I dug that. Key visual of the evening: Windy and Carl on these short little stools with this silly little paper lantern thing hung over them behind their beat up yamaha synth, with an array of little hipster kids sitting around them like it was story time.
Overall, the set (and cigarette smoke) made me sleepy, I'll probably try to pick some more of their music up to add to my repertoire of shit I like falling asleep to. Danny's doesn't get much of a recommendation - I think it'd do better if it was farther away from everything else and shed about 1/3 to 1/2 of its resident population. For a Monday night, it was packed way too tight, and the music didn't lend itself to the hipstering that was trying to persist in the back and bar area.
