It's finally sunk in. I'll never see most of these people again (when I do the occassions will be few and far between).
Graduation was hot, hot, hot! Temperatures were high and underneath those togas, people were covered with sweat! I don't know why Ateneo still won't consider having the ceremonies in PICC or something. Fortunately we were seated in the first row so the fan was facing us and was on full blast.
The speech by our valedictorian - Lisandro Claudio - was splattered with namechecks here and there. He mentioned the right people, which was the wise thing for a valedictorian to do. Was pleased when AMA's Social Entrep Challenge was mentioned. Part of the speech covered stuff about business and I'm not sure if that was modified specifically for today.
Dado Banatao was our commencement speaker. Mico and I have attended one of his talks before - he did speak about Entrepreneuship in Silicon Valley while we were still in USF. The commencement speech was quite technical and long. A lot of people got bored but I have to give him credit for the things he said. What he said are true no matter how you put it. Entrepreneurs choose to be so not because they like the idea of being an entrepreneur per se, but due to the excitement brought about by a product or service. He also made another point - that the Philippines is losing competitiveness because of its poor ability to develop and sustain new technologies given that technology is one major driver of today's knowledge-driven economy.
I have to admit though that I found the SOSS/SOH commencement speech to be more engaging. Yet they have their own strengths. While Abrera focused on personal growth and the reality of failure, Banatao focused more on the bigger picture. On the whole, I wouldn't say imediately that one is superior to the other. It depends on what you're looking at really. Then again, it's easier to say who could speak better.
I thought that the SOSE/SOM graduation would be tamer compared to yesterday's. Turned out I was wrong. By the time the MIS and Engineering graduates were called, people were making all sorts of bows (like flashing the 2 cords to signify their double degrees, showing the hand to signify a 5 year stay in Ateneo) to the uproars of the audience.
As expected, the end of graduation was spent taking pictures here, there and everywhere. This was when everything turned into a real sweatfest.
Had dinner in Summer Palace. Saw many Ateneans there. There were a lot in Heat, in the other restos of Edsa Shang, and in Summer Palace itself. Dropped by this resto in Wilson afterwards to inquire about a reception tomorrow and saw Andy, Wed, Jared, etc eating there.
So it's finally sunk in. The days when I go to classes in SEC, CTC, SOM, BEL, BERCH, KOSTKA, etc are over. College is finished and it's time to move on. I wonder when I'll see some of these people again.
Well, actually one last part of college isn't entirely finished. There's still the SOM Mall. Although we've finally closed shop, we still have some cleaning to do. We technically won't be cleared JSEC-wise, until May.
