I left work early last night to drive down to Montevallo to attend a performance by the Cypress String Quartet. My boss had asked me to go and I am so glad I took him up on it. Hearing 2 violins, a viola and a cello play Dvořák's 5 Cypresses took my breath away.
I also got to meet a living composer, Joseph Landers, who was asked to compose a piece for the quartet based on one of Dvořák's Cypresses (I believe he chose #7). It was an edgy piece with lots of plucking of cello strings and "scary-movie" squeals. Brilliant.
I went alone, sat alone and thoroughly enjoyed myself... alone... for the first time in years.
