August Moon Cove is a city in Bristol County, Massachusetts. It was founded by 1765 by William Hartley and was once a Silver mining community. August Moon Cove currently has a population of 32,069.
William Hartley
William Hartley, our towns founder was not only a shrewd businessman but also a compulsive gambler. He heard a rumor that a plot of land for sale was loaded with Silver. William Hartley kept thinking if he could buy the land and get his hands on the silver then he’d have more money to gamble with. Locating silver soon became an obsession with him. He bought maps, he bought the land, and he hired men to dig and build mine shafts in order to find the silver.
These families, the first families of August Moon Cove, worked day and night to look for silver but they found nothing. The Silver mines were merely a rumor concocted by a rival jeweler in Attleboro to run his completion out of town and knowing how greedy William Hartley was, well it turned out to be rather easy.
The first mysterious death happened outside the forest near the mines. They found one of the miners torn to shreds. Immediately they believed that a Black Bear was the cause. The next murder didn’t occur until the next full moon. Of course, this is what caused the Werewolf Hysteria. The settlers of August Moon cove believed that their beloved town was cursed by werewolves.
Of course werewolves did not exist and the deaths were simply from wild animals but that didn’t stop the folklore from growing out of control. And with the death toll rising and the non-existent Silver in the mines causing the settlers to become ill - from spending so much time in the mines, William Hartley admitted defeat and shut down the mines.
The following night William Hartley was found dead. His head had been cut off, stuck on a pike and was now planted in front of his home. Tell this day nobody knows who did it.
The Next night the settlers gathered together and formed their own town council which still runs the town today.
History
William Hartley had high hopes of finding a silver mine but instead the minors met unexpected and mysterious deaths. The blame went towards the natives in the area. Since Silver was not to be found the mines were shut down and fishing became the main Industry. It wasn’t until the twenty century that the history and folklore of the small town boosted the towns economy through tourism.
