(I know I've been slow on these this year)
On Sunday, we once again flew into the venue, thanks to my super-secret route in. Once again we were on the grounds by 4pm, and we headed out to the Sahara tent, where we caught The Glitch Mob, who were really sharp and inventive.
We then moved over to the Gobi tent to see Florence and the Machine. We were not the only ones, and we didn't get close to the text, but we were still happy we went, as she/they put on an excellent show. After the set ended, we wormed our way up to a central position to see Charlotte Gainsbourg. Her most recent album is really good (produced by Beck). While the crowd was less dense than for Florence & the Machine, we saw a ton of VIP wristbands in the crowd. We also saw Anne Hathaway:
I remember Charlotte Gainsbourg from my time in France -- I was living there when she recorded the song "Lemon Incest" with her father Serge Gainsbourg back in '87 (at the age of 19, I think). She's got a whisper-thin voice, but good presence and an excellent band. After her, Sly Stone was supposed the take the stage, and Tamara had been really excited to see him perform, being a big funk/soul fan. It was not to be, however -- he delayed his set (and apparently postponed it one more time before finally coming on).
Next was Orbital -- I've been a fan for yearrrrrrs, so it was great to finally see them, and they did not disappoint. Compared to almost all of the dance/techno/electronica we had heard all weekend, this was complex, intricate music-making, but it was also exceptionally danceable. Very good all around.
We then got dinner, and afterwards, Tamara grabbed a spot for the Gorillaz show, while I caught a bit of Thom Yorke. But only a bit, as it was just too noodly for my mood.
That left the Gorillaz. Tamara *loves* The Gorillaz, and I like them quite a bit. They played an excellent set, with great visuals, and kept the crowd on their feet for the whole thing. If I had a quibble, it was just that the heavy tie to the visuals made parts of the show feel like a string of music videos rather than an organic set.
By the end, we were BEAT. Three days takes a lot out of you, but another wonderful Coachella...
