CHAPTER FIVE
Somehow Jin had thought that things would change after last night’s phone call, that things would be different. But when he arrived at work the next morning everything was the same. He wasn’t sure what he had expected.
Here he was, sitting at his usual till, packing bags like nothing had happened. He wondered what Kazuya was doing. Did he regret it? He had hung up so suddenly, Jin didn’t even have the time to catch his breath and talk to him properly, without moaning every two seconds.
His eyes hurt in the artificial light of the shop. He hadn’t gotten much sleep last night, being busy thinking of Kazuya and...
“Okay, tell me what’s wrong. I’m sick of you moping around,” he heard Yamapi’s quiet whisper. The other man was busy observing a customer who was looking rather suspicious. Theft had gotten a lot more frequent in the last couple of weeks.
Was there something wrong? Jin liked to believe everything was alright. But if he was being honest with himself, he knew it was not. Quickly, he filled his friend in on his last phone call with Kazuya. When Jin had finished, Yamapi hit his hand against the counter. Hard.
“Ow Jin...” he exclaimed, rapidly waving his hand and trying to ease the self-inflicted pain, while at the same time staring at him. “You did what?” He blew on the hurt hand. “From what you told me Call shop boy didn’t seem to be the type to initiate phone sex!”
Jin let out an exasperated sigh.
“That’s what I thought.”
There was a pause in which neither of them spoke, Jin’s mind starting to wander back in time again, and Pi still examining his hand, before he let it rest on the counter. He shook his head slightly and a grin appeared on his face. Turning his gaze back on the shady customer, he slowly said: “So? Why are you so upset? Wasn’t he any good?”
Another sigh. Why wasn’t his friend able to tell what was wrong? Wasn’t it obvious?
“He was. God Yamapi, he was.”
“Then what’s up? Are you pissed at me or something?”
Jin kept silent.
“Boy, you need to stop pulling off the nervous in-love guy right now. It’s pissing me off. Get straight to the point, will you?”
A wave of anger washed through Jin. Pi of all people should know! He didn’t care about keeping his voice down anymore.
“It wasn’t me he was imagining having sex with, you idiot, it was you!!!”
The questionable customer threw them a shocked look before quickly leaving the store altogether. If the situation had been less serious, Jin might have been amused at his new way of dealing with thievery, but right now his thoughts were somewhere completely else.
Yamapi was looking at him.
“You know that’s not my fault, right?”
Jin’s hand reflexively brushed through his hair. “I know,” he said. “I know! But it’s driving me crazy, alright? It wasn’t my face he saw when he...”
Quickly, Yamapi covered Jin’s mouth with his own hand before the other managed to scare away any more customers.
“I get it,” he slowly removed his hand again, leaving Jin to look at him with a rather lost look. Yamapi had to fight the urge to sigh and run a hand through his friend’s messed up hair. Sometimes he really had to wonder about who was supposed to be the older one of them.
“So, what are you planning to do now?” Pi said before smiling at their next customer.
“I don’t know.”
Jin really didn’t know. What was he supposed to do? This whole situation was so messed up. Mechanically he did his job, packing away the few items Pi was pushing over the counter towards him. So he had had phone sex with Kazuya. Amazing phone sex. But the other didn’t even know what he looked like and...
“Have a nice day.”
The phrase came as automatically as the rest. He had said it a thousand times before. Now Jin could only smile bitterly at the irony of it all. Nice day. He kept wishing a nice day to those people, yet only a few ever returned the gesture.
“Thank you. Have a nice evening, ne?”
Okay, so this one ha-… Wait. Jin froze, his fingers clenching around the bag in his hand. He knew that voice. A sweat broke out on his forehead and he felt every inch of his body tremble in anticipation, as he slowly, very slowly raised his eyes, looking at the customer in front of him.
Small. Brown, wavy hair. Brown eyes.
Oh shit.
“Is there something wrong?” Kazuya was smiling at him. Jin swallowed heavily, trying his best to hide the fact that, right now, he was in complete and utter shock. This couldn’t be happening! He had to concentrate on answering and to not stumble over his own words, he told himself after a second though.
“Nothing... Nothing at all. Thank you for your purchase.”
Blinking, Jin stared at the retreating back and waited until the door had fallen shut behind it, before slumping forward with a groan, taking several deep breaths in a row. He felt his face burning and had almost forgotten Pi’s presence at all, when he felt a slight poking on his arm. Yamapi was looking at him with an amused grin plastered over his face.
“What was that? I thought you were alread-..”
Jin shook his head and mumbled something inaudible.
Yamapi laughed. “Say that again?”
“That was Kazuya.”
“Who?”
“Kazuya… The call shop boy.”
Jin could see the realization dawning on his friend’s face. “Ah! Call shop boy!” Nodding, he sat down again. “Well Jin, that’s quite the catch you got there.”
Despite the whole awkwardness of the situation, Pi’s comment caused Jin to smile widely in agreement. Kazuya was more gorgeous than he could have ever imagined, even in his wildest dreams. And boy, he knew what he was talking about.
Leaning back on his chair, Yamapi crossed his arms. He couldn’t help but smile at the dreamy look on Jin’s face. Still, hadn’t there been some kind of problem?
“Wait. Didn’t you say you had sent him a pic of me?”
Jin’s smile faltered. Right. He had messed up big time. And now Kazuya thought... Jin wanted to be struck by lightening, wanted to vanish from the face of the earth. What would Kazuya think of him now? He didn’t want to imagine.
The shrill ringtone of his cell pulled him out of his musings. A text message.
“Call me. -Kazuya”
He complied, bracing himself once and for all for telling the truth. Kazuya didn’t deserve to be lied to. He needed to straighten this out as soon as possible. Meaning: now.
He had decided on that, but still he had troubles hitting the right keys on his cell. His hands were too slippery. He didn’t want Kazuya to hate him, he didn’t.
Jin held his breath when Kazuya picked up the phone.
The other’s voice sounded amused. Jin wondered if this was the last time he would be hearing Kazuya like this.
“So, how is work? I hope Yamashita-san is alright.”
“Yeah, he is, but...”
Wait.
“Yamashita-san?”
“Your best friend, Yamapi. The cute co-worker. Yamashita was what his name tag said.”
For a moment, Jin felt nothing. And then he felt like dying.
“So you knew.”
Kazuya laughed. It didn’t sound sarcastic, but he could be mistaken. Maybe he only thought so because he didn’t want it to be sarcastic.
“Of course I did. How stupid do you think I am?”
”I’m sorry.”
What a lousy excuse, even to his own ears.
“You better be. Be glad you’re good-looking, or else I wouldn’t forgive you.”
Jin was sure he had to have misheard that. Kazuya couldn’t possibly be thinking of forgiving him? ”Liars. Above all, I hate liars. I’m pretty tolerable, I can handle a lot of things. The only thing I really hate is dishonesty, especially in a relationship.”
“Forgive… but... didn’t you say... liars...”
“Well, let’s say you’re an exception. So, when’s your next day off?”
