Apparently last winter was so awful (it was, it really was) I never managed to do that whole "Year in Fic" meme that I usually do. And seeing as this year was so bad for me creatively (oh boy was it ever) I think I'll combine 2010 and 2011 into one whole super rundown.
My Two Years in Fic
The Rundown
4 Supernatural fics:
Out the Other Side,
Your Own Kind of Hero,
Just Another Gin Joint,
Playing Princess1 Chronicles of Narnia fic:
Undertow.
2 Crossovers:
To Begin Again,
Saving the Day1 Multimedia:
Ruination Day For a total of 9 stories in 4 fandoms.
Looking back, did you write more fic than you thought you would this year, less, or about what you'd predicted?
Oh how the fannish gods have forsaken me in the past two years. Even with the extra padding I threw in (two untitled short-fics) the past two years don't even equal the year that came before it. Ugh.
What pairing/genre/fandom did you write that you would never have predicted in January 2010?
LOLOLOLOLOLOL *takes a valium, drinks a margarita* I never would have predicted that SPN would've taken a long dive into sucksville (though I should have). And with it went my heart? I don't know, it's just hard to get fired up about any writing project when things are the way they are. Clearly I need a shiny new fandom to reinvigorate me.
What's your favorite story of the year? Not the most popular, but the one that makes you happiest?
That's a toughy, but I think I'll have to go with either Your Own Kind of Hero or Undertow. They both really capture the images I saw in my head as I wrote them. Just Another Gin Joint was also something special, though I feel like I wasn't quite yet the kind of writer I needed to be to really do the story justice.
Did you take any writing risks this year? What did you learn from them?
Not particularly. Wait, I take that back. Just Another Gin Joint was a pretty big risk for me. It was a complex AU with lots of different things going on in the background. I worked hard at making character drive the plot but I wasn't quite able to make the actions at the very end as character driven as I wanted them to be.
From my past year of writing, what was:
Best story: Ruination Day. Or Your Own Kind of Hero. Both of them accomplished everything I wanted them to do in the way I wanted to do it. They're both very solid and remind me that I can, occasionally, be good at this whole "creating" thing.
Story Most Underappreciated by the Universe: I don't know. They've all pretty much averaged out as regards comments. Did I hope to break two pages of comments on Gin Joint solely because it was a Big Bang? Of course I did, but the fact that I didn't doesn't keep me up at nights. It was well-received by those who read it and that's pretty okay by me.
Most fun: Hmmmm, I don't know. I think I had the most fun with my meme snippets. They were light-hearted and let me dip my toe back in the writing pool after toon long on the deck.
Most disappointing: They are what they are. I'm mostly disappointed in the stories that I've hardly even started. That Dean/Cas Boy Scout Camp AU isn't going to write itself, after all.
Most sexy: Your Own Kind of Hero was certainly the slashiest, followed closely by Just Another Gin Joint. Actually, Gin Joint is kind of a smorgasboard of ships. I think you could pair up any character with any other and it would all be awesome.
Story With a Single Sexy Moment: Undertow. Oh baby. Mermaid/Susan OTP.
Hardest to write: Just Another Gin Joint. There may be a day when writing a 20,000+ word story is easy-ish, but today (or yesterday, or two years ago) is not that day.
Most "OMG HEY *I* WROTE THAT! Fanon-Turned-Canon Moment: LOLOLOLOLOLOL Let's not discuss any of this at all. I didn't think I could become an even bigger Bitter Old Fandom Queen but apparently I could. Why aren't we ever allowed to have nice things?
Most unintentionally telling: Your Own Kind of Hero. Just trust me on that one.
This year's theme and the story that demonstrates it most: I don't know... Maybe "picking up the pieces." Because sometimes you just have to move on and start over. It's the only thing you can do.
Do you have any fanfic or profic goals for the New Year? Goals. Goals would be a good thing to have. I'll get back to you on that one.
