One unbeaten run had to come to an end at the Gabba with the high-flying Kangaroos feeling the pain of a 37-point defeat to the Lions in front of 29,233 fans in Brisbane.
In an undistinguished goalkicking display from both sides, the Lions' purposeful start - they restricted the Roos to just one behind in the opening term - carried them through an often sloppy encounter.
Jonathan Brown kicked 6.6 to take his season's tally to 59.
Brisbane's 10.17 (77) to 5.10 (40) victory ensured its recent winning streak stretched to five games with the Kangaroos suffering its first loss in six weeks and Dean Laidley's side's third defeat in its previous 15 outings.
The Lions lost a seesawing encounter by 24 points at Carrara in round four but have since welcomed back the likes of Nigel Lappin, Josh Drummond, Troy Selwood, Rhan Hooper and Joel Macdonald from injury to embark on an unlikely tilt at the finals.
Drummond was a late withdrawal from this latest Lions' victory with a knee problem but they still started the way they finished against the Pies last weekend despite their dominance not quite equating with just a three-goal lead on the quarter-time scoreboard.
Selwood left the field in some anguish soon after the restart following a heavy collision with David Hale but rejoined a sloppy second quarter moments later after a pain-killing injection in his shoulder.
By that point the visitors should have been closer to Brisbane but they too were suffering from a touch of the kicking yips with Brown regathering his composure to fire home his side's only two majors of the quarter and settle home nerves.
Brown had earlier started with two behinds - one more than his previous Gabba appearance when he booted 10.1 against Carlton a fortnight ago - and twice struck the upright in the second term.
But Brisbane's gun full forward has been in eye-catching form over the past month and finished with 14 marks in a one-sided match-up against Roos defender Michael Firrito.
Fellow co-captain Lappin was excellent while converted midfielder Jed Adcock marked his 50th match for the Lions with another influential performance, ending with 30 possessions.
The tireless Wayde Mills kicked his first-ever goals in senior AFL football but Ash McGrath didn't reappear in the final term after injuring his forearm in a clash with team-mate Hooper.
The Kangaroos lined up without veteran Glenn Archer who withdrew on the eve of the clash through illness.
