Well, it's a sort of writing instrument. But instead of using a pen, quill, it automatically writes it for you as long as you hit ...the right button. They're quite useful, and it seems most people in the City use them.
It would be useful to learn.

Oh, sorry. A telephone is a way of communicating with someone you can't see face to face, verbally. This one's a bit different, though. It doesn't seem to have a directory.
