James seized his friend in front of the bookseller's window.
"Remusremusremus.... you aren't going to believe this! I just got a note from Lily asking me to meet her in five minutes. She wants help with a birthday present she 's putting together for her father. Do you know what this means?"
"That she wants help putting together a birthday present for her father?"
"It means the Spring Thaw has arrived, Remus, right here in the middle of July. I've melted the glacier. I need mints. Have you got mints? Damn! Why has Sirius always got the mints?"
"Let's just review for a moment. Lily has asked you for five minutes of your expertise and from this you've extrapolated that she's going to want to snog you in the street?"
"What am I going to do? I had onions for lunch!" James held his hand in front of his face and exhaled in cautious puffs.
Remus drew back politely by several discreet inches. "I'm afraid a peppermint toad is the best I can offer. It might be a little linty."
James snatched the white confection from Remus' open palm. "I'll take it! Thank you! You're the best. Now get lost!" He rushed Remus toward the door of the shop.
He had just stuffed the entire candy in his mouth when a voice made him start and turn around.
"James?"
"Grblgm!"
He wasn't sure, but he thought he saw the sparkle of genuine amusement in the corners of her green eyes. "Sorry, I'm a little early," she said graciously.
"Nh-uh," he shook his head. "Lrgm?"
"As eloquent as ever, James." she remarked, and grinned.
