The "Candy is Dandy" Challenge Prompt Received: Bellatrix Lestrange and Jelly Slugs
A/N: Wow, was this ever a hard challenge for someone who likes amphibians and the Longbottom family! *whines* But here it is.
Bella wouldn't admit it under torture, but she's afraid of anything slimy.
She's afraid of slugs and snails, frogs and their spawn, and toads when they're wet. In fact, her boggart is a toad, a great gaping-mouthed toad with unblinking eyes that see everything she's ever done.
She has that nasty little cousin of hers to thank for it, too, the one who thought it was so bloody amusing to drop stuff down her clothes, not that he got away with that more than once or twice before she made him pay, and pay dear. And then there was the other, even nastier little cousin, who found something else in the garden to torment her with. Bella wasn't a squeamish sort of girl, but the day she had to use a pair of chopsticks to pick a slug off her vanity mirror was one nobody in the family would soon forget. She made sure he paid for his pleasure, as well.
And there was Frank. Frank had a toad, and the gall to refuse to get rid of the warty thing even when she asked, so very sweetly, even when she'd demanded, not so sweetly. She made sure he never touched her again with those hands, no matter how good-looking he was, and really, she wouldn't be caught dead with a Gryffindor, anyway. But then that miserable Hufflepuff twit had piped up about how useful the things were in the garden, how they ate slugs, like that was so redeeming, the little snip, sitting there with dirt under her fingernails, and eyeglasses, no less, and if ever two people deserved each other it was Toad Boy and Frog Eyes.
She made them pay for it, too. It just took a little longer.
And now Bella finds herself lying in a field, at the high heat of the day, at the end of a long war, like some kind of fancy candy melting away in the sun into a puddle of green.
She's wandless and waiting, waiting to be discovered by the other side, because she knows there's no one left from hers. She has a brief nightmare about a giant white peppermint toad eating a big gooey jelly slug, while chocolate frogs hopped around her shoes and stuck to her dress.
She's wakened, briefly, by the sound of Frank and Alice's brat in the distance, calling frantically for some boy named Trevor. Bella wonders idly if she'd taken down any boys named Trevor today, but they all blur together in her fading mind.
She turns her head and sees that there's a toad sitting in the grass nearby. It's big, and brown, and stares at her with unblinking eyes.
Didn't it just figure.
