“There are too many green ones on the left.”
“What? It’s perfect!”
“And this big concentration of blue over here should be spaced out more evenly….” Hermione waved towards the eastern quadrant of the towering fir, “and the one at the top should be yellow. You know, like a star.”
“Next year, you’re doing the lights,” Dean grumbled.
“You’re the one who wanted a Muggle tree,” Hermione pointed out.
“Hey. My mother decorated one of these things every year completely by hand, and I’m sure your parents did, too. I thought it would be a nice bit of nostalgia for us.”
“Well, it is, but it’s also nine and a half miles of lights on strings. Really, Dean, you’re an artist, I thought you’d have a better eye for this sort of thing.” Hermione shook her head a little, then her voice grew gentle. “You’ve been at this for hours. Try to finish up while I make us some cocoa, OK?”
Dean waited until Hermione had disappeared into the kitchen and was completely out of sight, then pulled out his wand.
There was nostalgia, and then there was just plain common sense.
