Note: I think this is OK as a standalone, but all these N/C drabbles are part of the Where You Stand scenario.
Gran had always stressed the importance of proper comportment. That included greeting people in a calm and civilized manner, no matter how long they’d been gone, or how happy you were to see them. It wouldn’t do to jump on a person like an over-eager Golden Retriever the minute you laid eyes on them. Neville might not have agreed with all of his grandmother’s advice, but he certainly remembered every word of it, and it was hard to discount.
So instead, Neville tried to express how glad he was that Charlie was coming home by making sure everything was ready for him in the house… crisp linen over the table, wine up from the cellar, the trees in the foyer trimmed into proper topiary, all the formalities they usually never bothered with. True, it was reserved, but Charlie would notice all the details and understand the sentiment behind it, surely.
Neville had just decided he might manage this reunion with some degree of dignity and decorum after all, when he heard the loud crack of Apparition outside the kitchen door, and everything went out the window.
Neville pushed the door open so fast that Charlie barely had time to drop his suitcases on the steps and reach out with open arms. Neville had no hesitation about falling into them.
After all, none of the Weasleys ever held back when greeting those they loved, and hadn’t Charlie just spent a year trying to teach him to be a little less reserved?
Charlie’s way was a lot better, Neville decided.
